VounteeroftheWeekVolunteer of the Week
Kate Phillips is our volunteer of the week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Adult Recipient!

Kate has been with Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County as a tutor for 10 years. In those 10 years, she has volunteered over 750 hours in their 1-on-1 tutoring program. She has also been on their Board of Directors and has served over 120 hrs in that capacity.

Kate has become an essential link in our community, bridging a gap between Hispanic families and the native population. She is fluent in Spanish and has earned the trust of many families in our area. She tutors local adults and helps them work more effectively in our community.

Kate has 2 primary responsibilities with Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County and each is just as important as the other. First and foremost, she is an outstanding tutor. Through tutoring, she has not only impacted the lives and direction of her adult students, but their children as well. Secondly, in her role on the Board of Directors, she attends and energetically participates in all meetings and is a member of the student and tutor support committee. When other evaluators need an interpreter for an event, Kate is always there to help.

Kate selflessly puts others before herself every day. She has taken individuals and small groups into her home and given them a place to stay while they complete their studies. In her home, the students devote 30 hours per week to classes. Finding ways to overcome the fear of labels and have people come forward for help is still the greatest challenge Literacy Partners face. Kate has the ability to inspire and create an incredibly strong, confident group of learners, which increases the impact she has on those she helps, which in turn positively affects the community.

Kate has affected so many lives in Kewaunee County. In helping two of her students study for and pass the GED exam, she helped open up a new world of job opportunities for both of them, creating a better life through literacy for them, and their entire family. Kate embodies volunteerism, loyalty and perseverance. She strives to help everyone she comes in contact with become the best version of themselves, which is an amazing feat.

Thank you from everyone at Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County for all that you do to help our community become stronger!
