Katie Stockman is our Volunteer of the Week!
The United reSISTERS is a group of young Somali women who have a passion for creating a more tight-knit Green Bay community, and overall a more peaceful world. The group is the only one in the area dedicated to the specific demographic of young, African, female refugees who have come from all over the world and now reside in the Green Bay area. The group chose the name "United reSISTERS" as they wanted this group to portray the ultimate sisterhood: bonding together to resist hate, prejudice, and misunderstanding while doing so through education, resilience, and love. These young women range in age from 15-25 and are primarily attending a Green Bay public high school or beginning their journey into college or the workforce. All are now residents of the Green Bay community. This group was established in the spring of 2017 by Diana Delbecchi, the Assistant Director of the GAP Program at SNC and Courtney Maye, Outreach Specialist at the Art Garage, but it is only made possible by their dedicated volunteer advocate, Katie Stockman. United reSISTERS began as an attempt to create a space for these young refugee women. The group meets once a week and is using art as a medium to focus on refugee and immigrant issues and women's rights. The group intends to shine a light on the growing presence of Somali youth, create an atmosphere of social responsibility to the common good and be a source of inspiration and support to younger generations of Somali girls in the community.
Katie has been with this project since its inception in April 2017. Since the beginning, Katie has served as a committed volunteer leader and organizer of the group. She is a life source for the group and is an inspiration to the young women. Quite frankly, Katie's role is one of many hats. The group has a three-pronged approach to empowerment and Katie has championed the third goal of "confidence building and personal growth." This arm of the program requires someone (Katie) to make a deliberate attempt to get the young women out of their comfort zone to try new things, learn new skills and build confidence in their own abilities and voices through culturally appropriate integration within the Green Bay community. It requires someone with deep connections to our community and a personality that thrives on expanding their network and Katie is just that! Katie is charismatic, in-the-know and socially active.
Katie has built many opportunities for the group to be a part of including organizing community events to celebrate Somali identity, coordinating with the Mayor's office to receive funding for the group to attend a leadership training, facilitating the group's attendance at arts events (i.e., attending the Nutcracker ballet as a group, attending the Neville Public Museum, and volunteering at the Wildlife Sanctuary). Another large part of Katie's role has been designing opportunities for the young women to build skills. A desperate need expressed by the group is their desire to learn how to drive. The Green Bay district no longer provides driving lessons as a built-in part of the curriculum and many immigrant and refugee families do not have the financial resources to pay for these lessons outside of school. As a result, Katie single-handedly built up a driving program as part of the United reSISTERS project and has been teaching these young women how to drive on her own time with her own vehicle. She has even recruited additional volunteers in the community to participate and thus far, they have had three United reSISTERS pass their driving test and receive their full license. This would never had been possible without Katie's dedication and giving heart. Katie's positivity, selflessness, and attention to detail has started a chain reaction of kindness, efficiency, and raw, hard work in countless other volunteers and community members in Green Bay.
Thank you, Katie, for working for the common good and for building a more welcoming community!
