New Community Shelter has had a remarkable man by the name of Otis Roberson volunteering with them for the past 4 years. Otis decided he wanted to give back to the place that helped him when times were hard. Although Otis is legally blind, this doesn't stop him from going to the shelter to volunteer one to five days a week.
Otis came to New Community Shelter as a person in need of shelter, was provided a case manager and immediately began working on his goals. His stay with the shelter was short as his focus was on obtaining his own apartment which he did right away. He has overcome a lot to become the person he is today. Otis displays leadership skills every time he enters their building and is dedicated to the shelters mission and what he is doing. He is well respected by everyone who comes through their doors.
His abilities are not limited as he can do almost anything their paid staff can do. Not only has Otis impacted their residents, the community, and staff, but himself as well. He sees good in people and his kindness and willingness to listen is welcomed with appreciation by everyone and in turn has inspired others as well. Otis is a constant reminder to all of their residents and community members that if you try hard and want to succeed in life that the goal is attainable.
Otis is a true success story, one that the residents look up to weekly, and the New Community Shelter is grateful for knowing and having him with them and thank him for all that he does for the shelter and the residents.
On Thursday, October 27, there will be a full story on Fox 11 regarding Otis, so please be sure to watch and learn more about Otis' amazing life and how he turned struggle into triumph.
