volunteeroftheweek Volunteer of the Week
Mary Steeno is our volunteer of the week as well as our WPS Volunteer in Education Award Runner Up!

Mary tutors kindergarten children at Nicolet School and of the 21 students in the class, none of them attended 4k. She assists the teacher by working with the children 1 on 1 with letter identification, their alphabet, counting, writing, reading, and also reads stories to the children and helps during "center time". She listens to their personal stories and is a caring adult in their lives.

Mary provides TLC to the children that they would not receive if she did not volunteer in the classroom. She helps the children to stay on task while the teacher is teaching guided
reading sessions in small groups. She motivates the children to do their best and is a regular weekly tutor in the class.

Mary goes above and beyond when it comes to volunteering. Even though she is only required to volunteer one hour per week, she comes in three times a week and totals 5-7 hours each week. From September to December 2016, she put in 99 hours of tutoring. The teacher has indicated that their class has one of the highest achieving groups of children because of Mary's help. Literacy is the key to success and Mary is opening the door for them to do well in school and to love reading.

Mary first began tutoring with the Reading Coaches program through the Volunteer Center of Brown County in September of 2016. She loves helping the children and saw the need for additional assistance in the classroom and added to her tutoring sessions each week.

Mary is helping the children to reach academic success and to meet benchmark standards in education.

Thank you Mary for giving of your time so that these children can have a better future!
