Rod Leadley is our Volunteer of the Week!
Children, teens and adults with disabilities like Cerebral Palsy; Down Syndrome & Autism face many challenges. Hippotherapy is a powerful intervention that can dramatically improve their daily function and quality of life. At Exceptional Equestrians, it has changed lives for children who could not sit up, walk or speak. Help from committed, reliable volunteers is crucial to be able to provide horseback therapies, which require a team of two to three volunteers for each individual.
For 14 years, Rod has been helping kids with disabilities as a horseback therapy volunteer at Exceptional Equestrians. Rod uses his horsemanship expertise to lead therapy horses during hippotherapy riding sessions. He also grooms, tacks and feeds the horses, and helps in the stable. As a retired teacher and track coach from Edison Junior High and Preble High School, Rod has always loved working with young people. "I've always had a soft spot for kids with real struggles," he said. "Helping these kids ride each week, I get to see them as people, rather than their handicaps. I get to know their personalities and how to interact with each individual. They do a lot for me too," he added.
Rod dedicates two days a week and sometimes three, volunteering four to seven hours a week. He has served over 600 hours in his 14 years with Exceptional Equestrians. Rod's longtime commitment to volunteer service has made it possible for hundreds of kids with disabilities in Northeast Wisconsin to get hippotherapy services, which has a lifetime impact on their cognitive, physical, emotional and social well being. Without his hard work and commitment, families in our community would not even have access to hippotherapy. Rod's gift of service has made a world of difference for hundreds of individuals and their families.
Thank you, Rod, for helping youth with disabilities reach milestones!
