Volunteer of the Week
Roy DeRuyter is our Volunteer of the Week!

Roy has volunteered with the Circles of Support in the Green Bay men’s group for almost two years. He attends weekly support groups to encourage pro-social behaviors and thought patterns for Circles of Support participants (men recently released from prison). Roy faithfully and quietly stands by the participants, being a positive male role model, asking questions to allow the participants to think deeper about their issues and how to overcome them. Roy further assists them outside of the Circle to help with basic needs and other reentry needs.

Other Circles of Support volunteers believe that Roy goes above and beyond to help these men and that Roy fully understands the need for participants to talk and Roy is a willing listener. He gives advice when it seems appropriate, but he mostly just wants the guys to tell him what’s on their mind, knowing that in doing so they will come to a better understanding of their own thoughts. Roy also provides rides to appointments etc. as often as he can. He is heavily relied on by participants and by the other volunteers. For a population so used to being alienated, having Roy show these men trust and respect is invaluable to helping them reintegrate into society. He is incredibly genuine and the rest of the volunteer group is proud to work alongside him.

Roy adds, “I want to help others. That is my focus. I know if I help others, I improve life for those guys I work directly with but it also helps society.
Everything I do to help no matter how small helps us all. Sometimes it is the little things that mean so much. You don't know exactly who is watching and I always try to put my best intention into what I do. Someone may see what I do and be helped in some way by my example.” Anne Strauch, Circles Director, states “Roy is genuine, real, and approachable. He goes that extra mile to care for and mentor our participants. He’s quietly compassionate and it comes across in his actions. Roy treats our participants with respect and makes sure they understand that they have worth and that they have much to give to others. He is not a pushover. Roy employs his encouraging ways while being a strong role-model for our participant’s journey to a successful transition back into our community.” Roy is a vital part of that journey for the participants.

Thank you, Roy, for being a role model to Circles participants and to fellow volunteers!
