Volunteer of the Week

H James Smet is our volunteer of the week and the runner-up in the Education Category at the 2026 Volunteer Awards, presented by Wisconsin Public Service Foundation!

For many in our community, the path to U.S. citizenship can feel complex and overwhelming. Through his leadership of a weekly Tuesday evening citizenship class at COMSA, H addresses this critical need by preparing aspiring citizens for the naturalization test. In his classes, students learn U.S. history, civics, government, and the interview skills they need to confidently pass the citizenship exam. Because the test format and questions change over time, H continually updates his curriculum, staying ahead of new requirements and policy shifts to ensure his students are fully prepared.

In order to further assist students in improving their language skills as they learn about their new country, H partnered with COMSA's ESL teacher to make the class format more conversational. He is motivated by the students' resilience and determination, takes pride in watching their growth, and shares their joy when they pass the naturalization test and are sworn in as United States citizens.

Beyond the classroom, H has served on COMSA's board of directors and is a trusted source of critical immigration updates for their staff. He is also an active volunteer with Casa Alba Melanie and the Migration Advocacy Group. His commitment helps individuals successfully navigate the naturalization process, opening doors to greater economic opportunity, civic participation, and long-term stability for themselves and their families. 2026 Broadway District Lunchtime Trashforce - August 4, September 7, and October 6

Help pick up trash along the Broadway District, making sure it looks presentable. Shifts: 11:00 am-12:30 pm on each of the above dates.

Willow Tree Lifesaver Event - August 5

This annual benefit for Willow Tree Cornerstone Child Advocacy Center features trolley rides to homes along the Fox River, a buffet, an open bar, and live music! Volunteers are needed in several roles:

Trolley - One person on each trolley to ride over to the homes with guests to answer any questions and direct them where they need to be. Once everyone is over on the other side of the river, each volunteer will be assigned to a home to monitor while the trolleys circle between the three homes transporting guests. At the home, the volunteer would be available for questions, i.e., restroom locations, timeline of events, etc. This person would also monitor the bottled water and non-alcoholic beverages to see if they need to be filled or ice added. Once 7:00 pm approaches, guests would be encouraged to get onto the trolleys to get back to Thompson Marina on St. Norbert College's campus for the program, with the volunteer riding along.
Clean-up - Help with the post-event clean-up, including collecting trash, recycling, and loading the vans both at the houses and the marina.

Shifts: 4:00-7:00 pm (trolley), 7:00-10:00 pm (clean-up). Minimum age: 18.

Stuff the Bus: One Stop School Shop - August 6

Volunteers are needed to help hand out shopping lists to customers entering Walmart and collect purchased school supplies from customers exiting the store. This volunteer role does require standing and being outside. Shifts: 9:45 am-12:00 pm, 11:45 am-2:00 pm, and 1:45-4:00 pm.

Neighbors Feeding Neighbors - August 6, 13, 20, and 27 (plus other dates)

Volunteers are needed in two roles to assist with this effort:

Food-boxing – Help box vegetables and meat (frozen) into boxes/containers/packets.
Transportation – Deliver food from COMSA to set spots.

Additional dates: September 3, 10, 17, and 24; October 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29; and November 5 and 12. Shifts: 10:00 am-12:00 pm (food-boxing) and 12:30-2:30 pm (transportation – tentative, flexible). Minimum age for student helpers: 15 (high school and college students do not need a background check).

Lambeau Field Concession Stand - August 7 and 28, September 6 and 24, and October 11 and 18

This year, Golden House is focusing on the first half of the season and has been assigned to Stand 105-I – Draft Pick. It's a great location serving beverages and snacks, and they're expecting it to provide a smooth and enjoyable volunteer experience for everyone involved. Before volunteering at your first event, all volunteers are required to complete a mandatory training course. The training takes approximately 1½ hours and must be finished before your scheduled volunteer shift. Shifts:

Lambeau Field Ticket Scanning - August 7 and 28 and September 6 and 24

Hand of Hope seeks volunteer groups to assist with ticket scanning at various Lambeau Field events. Groups will check in with the volunteer supervisor, grab a water and red polo/jacket from the usher room, then walk to their assigned gate. PMI staff/volunteer supervisors can provide direction. Groups typically stay together, but on occasion, several group members may be asked to scan at a separate gate. A gate supervisor will train groups using a handheld ticket scanning device. There are also self-scanning pedestals at some gates (which Lambeau is transitioning to). Gate supervisors will set groups up by the bike racks, then you will scan all incoming fans' tickets. Lambeau Field is 100% mobile ticketing. If you have any ticketing issues, gate supervisors are there to help and be a resource! Groups normally stay 30-45 minutes after kick-off, then are released by their gate supervisor. Volunteers are asked to thank the fans for coming and be engaged in the fun! You will be standing your entire shift. Individuals must wear tan or black pants (no shorts, no capris). Any shirt is fine as PMI will provide a red polo/jacket to wear over your shirt. Ponchos, sunscreen, and water are provided. Shifts:

Door County Pet Walk - August 8

Door County Pet Walk is the Wisconsin Humane Society's annual dog-friendly walk to support animals in need. It features a leisurely stroll through Peterson Park in Sturgeon Bay, as well as music, local vendors, a doggie costume contest, family-friendly activities, plus games and treats for four-legged participants! Volunteers are needed to set up, run games, help with registration, show walkers where to go, and clean up. Various shifts from 7:00 am-12:00 pm. Coffee, Culture, and Conversation - August 8

Grab a coffee and connect with English learners from around the world! Learn about different cultures while helping students practice their English conversation skills in a relaxed, informal setting. The students are advanced English learners, and conversation starters will be provided, so no teaching or tutoring experience is necessary. Just come ready to chat and make new friends! Join JOSHUA's Environmental Justice Task Force in cleaning up State Highway 54 from State Highway 172 to County Highway GE! All supplies are provided. Reading Coaches for Kids Initial Training Sessions - August 11 and 12

Help kids become successful readers. Volunteer as a Reading Coach and make a lasting impact. Good Neighbor Week - August 17-21 (Allouez) and September 21-25 (Green Bay)

Volunteers will get to see the impact of their work with hands-on projects for homeowners in need at homes in Allouez and Green Bay. Work such as landscaping, yardwork, painting, gutter-cleaning and repair, and power-washing are common. Some tasks include skilled labor such as door hanging/repair/trimming, installing handrail/safety bars, window repair/replacement, and fence, deck and siding repair. Lead project coordinators will be available to guide the work, and skilled handymen/professionals are always welcome to share their knowledge and expertise to educate both volunteers and homeowners. Individuals and organizations or business groups are welcome. NeighborWorks is open to working with groups that are unavailable to volunteer during the specified dates in order to help as many homeowners as possible. Multiple shifts are available: four-hour half-day projects (morning and afternoon) or six-hour full-day shifts. Minimum age: 18. Badger Bash North - September 5

Various volunteer opportunities are available at this event:

Info tent – Help event attendees with general event information. Shifts: 3:30-6:00 pm and 6:00-8:30 pm.
Kids area and yard games – Help kids with sidewalk chalk and oversee bubble machines and yard games. Shift: 3:30-6:00 pm.
Beverage tent – Help serve canned and tap beverages to attendees. Shifts: 3:30-6:00 pm and 6:00-9:30 pm.

Conversation Facilitators - starting September 14

Literacy Green Bay is looking for volunteers to lead small groups of students in conversation to practice their English. No teaching experience or second language skills are required. Literacy Green Bay will provide conversation starters and topics, if needed. Just bring a love of connecting and creating community! Shifts starting September 14: 4:30-5:30 pm (Mondays and Tuesdays) or 11:30 am-12:30 pm (Wednesdays and Thursdays). Volunteers can sign up to come one day a week, or several days a week. Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

Lawn Attendant

A lawn attendant is needed for summer and fall. Duties: mow lawn every week or every two weeks, rake/sweep up sticks and leaves as needed, spray weeds, etc. Shifts: any time between 9:00 am-4:00 pm; the time frame is on the volunteer's schedule as long as the grass stays in control. Individuals as young as 15 may volunteer with parental consent.

Aurora Hospice Volunteers

Aurora at Home Hospice is a not-for-profit organization providing end-of-life care and support services to patients and family members. Volunteering for hospice helps ease this burden by providing companionship, comfort, and other services to people receiving hospice care. Their volunteers also provide support for the families of people receiving care at the end of life. Roles include:

Companion volunteers spend time with patients who have a serious illness. These volunteers may provide respite for caregivers or socialization for patients.
Veterans in their volunteer program help other veterans through the end-of-life transition by providing a listening ear and comforting presence. Hospice volunteers in the Veterans for Veterans program also honor and celebrate veterans with pinning ceremonies in recognition of their service.
Pet therapy volunteers use certified pet therapy dogs to spread joy, reduce anxiety, and ease fears for patients and visitors alike. All therapy dogs must have their Animal-Assisted Therapy Certification to participate in these volunteer programs.
Bereavement callers place calls to patients' homes six months after their loss, providing families with a listening ear.
Community outreach volunteers assist with expos and distributing marketing materials.

Foreclosure Prevention Volunteer

Help Catholic Charities' Financial Health team find pending foreclosure cases once per week across their 16-county area. Searches are conducted online using CCAP (Wisconsin's court system database). Using personal computers and working from home, volunteers will help struggling homeowners quickly get legitimate guidance when they are very vulnerable by connecting the Financial Health team with those at risk of foreclosure. Training is provided in person or virtually by the Financial Health team. Volunteers must possess basic computer skills. Flexible shifts, 1 hour per week or less.

Client Legal Advice Volunteers

Catholic Charities hears from many clients who have struggles with landlords and who are seeking help for this situation. The organization is seeking a volunteer attorney to provide some limited information and possibly connect clients with a local attorney who can assist. This could be a service available to any client of Catholic Charities. Flexible shifts.

Volunteer Childcare and Transportation Support for ESL Learners

COMSA seeks volunteers for several different roles:

Childcare - Assist in supervising and engaging the children of young mothers while the mothers attend ESL classes and work to improve their English language skills.
Transportation - Pick up ESL students from their homes, transport them to classes, and return them home after the sessions conclude.

No prior experience is required; a welcoming and multicultural environment is provided. Flexible shifts: Fridays (through August 28), 9:30-11:30 am and 4:30-6:30 pm; Saturdays (through August 29), 10:00 am-1:00 pm. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for one or multiple shifts based on their availability. Minimum age: 16. High school student volunteers are not required to undergo a background check.

COMSA Summer School

Volunteers will assist in various programs and field trips for COMSA's kindergarten through 12th grade students. Summer school will generally be one day per week for 3-8 hours, depending on the activity. They are also looking for people who would be willing to share their hobbies with students, such as crocheting, woodworking, candle-/soap-making, cake decorating, etc. Shifts: various days and times in June, July, and August; please reach out to them for more details. Volunteer Driving

Provide safe and caring transport for people with disabilities and aging adults (60+) to work, medical appointments, grocery shopping, and daily living activities. Curative has multiple vehicle options, depending on what you're comfortable driving. Routes are provided for each passenger. Shifts: 7:30-11:30 am and 12:30-4:30 pm, or serve as an 'on-call' back-up when drivers are needed. Minimum age: 18.

Girls on the Run Coaches

Be the coach who changes everything! Girls on the Run of Northeast Wisconsin is a 10-week youth development program that blends physical activity with social-emotional learning, helping girls build joy, confidence, and resilience that lasts a lifetime. They're looking for coaches who care. Each season (fall and spring), caring volunteer coaches guide small teams of girls through interactive, twice-a-week lessons, a meaningful community impact project, and a celebratory, non-competitive 5K that marks everything they've accomplished together. The program is delivered at sites such as public, private, and parochial schools, community centers, and others.

You don't need to be a runner! You just need to believe in young people. All new coaches receive full training, and every practice has at least two coaches, so you're never on your own. Whether you have a full season to give or are exploring how you can get involved, they would love to hear from you!

Summer Concert Series

Join the Green Bay Botanical Garden for an evening of music in the garden on select Thursday or Friday nights throughout the summer. Support the concert in the following areas: concessions, parking, shuttle-driving, and more! Two- or four-hour shifts between 4:00-8:00 pm on Thursdays and 5:00-9:00 pm on Fridays. Minimum age: 16 or 18, depending on the role.

Celebration Dinners

You can help House of Hope residents celebrate birthdays, babies, GEDs, and more. They’re looking for individuals or groups to provide dinner on the third Wednesday of each month. Meals should be prepared offsite and dropped off by 4:00 pm that day (or earlier if they can be refrigerated or frozen). Please plan to provide a main dish and side, salad, or veggies for about 30 people. If you are interested, please sign up here.

Facilities Crew

The Facilities Crew exists to support the mission of House of Hope through ongoing property maintenance in order to provide safe and supportive places where clients can thrive. They do this by gathering monthly to complete simple home improvement tasks that would otherwise require hiring labor. Tasks may include repairing and moving furniture, painting, yard work, cleaning walls, changing lightbulbs, and more! You need not be super handy (though that’s great) but rather have a willingness to serve as needed! Shifts: third Tuesday of each month, 6:00-8:00 pm. House of Hope empowers youth experiencing homelessness by providing a path to stability through emergency shelter and ongoing supportive services. House of Hope envisions a future where every youth has a home. They have volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups. Individuals must be age 16 or older to volunteer on their own. Laundry Assistants

Volunteer Tutors

Change a life in just a few hours a week. Literacy Green Bay is looking for volunteers to work one-on-one with adult learners in our community. Whether you're helping someone improve their reading and writing skills or practice English, you'll make a direct and meaningful difference. Volunteer opportunities:

Literacy tutor – Support adults with reading and writing skills.
ELL tutor – Help English learners build confidence in speaking, reading, and writing.
Citizenship support – Assist with citizenship test preparation (Spanish-speaking volunteers needed).
Conversation tutor – Practice English through informal conversation or lead conversation groups with multiple students.

No teaching experience or second language skills are required. Literacy Green Bay provides training, materials, and ongoing support. Volunteer one to two hours per week on a flexible schedule that works for you and your student. Minimum age: 18.

Gift Shop

Gift shop volunteers will run the cash register, greet customers, and price merchandise. Experience is not necessary. Volunteers are needed on a long-term basis. Farmers' Market on Broadway

Various volunteer opportunities are available for this weekly Wednesday event.

Beverage tent - Serve and pour alcoholic beverages; this also entails cash- and card-handling. First shift: 2:45-5:30 pm, second shift: 5:15-8:00 pm.
Info booth/fresh food drive - Sit under the info booth tent and assist marketgoers, hand out maps, and help with other general information. Shift: 3:00-8:00 pm.
Set-up crew - Assist with the set-up of the market (tents, garbage cans, banners, etc.); this is outdoor work and lifting is required. Shift: 12:30-3:00 pm.
Tear-down crew - Assist with the clean-up of the market (tents, garbage cans, banners, etc.); this is outdoor work and lifting is required. Shift: 7:45-9:00 pm.

Become a Resident Rights Advocate!

Volunteer advocates are needed to visit with local residents of nursing homes and assisted living communities! These volunteers listen for opportunities to support and empower residents to speak up about issues affecting their quality of life while living in long term care. Training is provided; no experience is necessary. Must pass a background check. Next training is August 25 in Appleton! Visits are made one time per week between 8:00 am-8:00 pm for one to three hours at a time. Minimum age: 18.

Unity is a not-for-profit partnership of Bellin Health, St. Mary's HSHS, and St. Vincent HSHS. Unity cares for patients with serious illnesses and provides support for caregivers. The services help maintain patients' dignity, comfort, and self-determination. Unity's grief services are a resource and support for families and the greater community. Volunteers are needed in the following roles:
