Home-Bound Meal Drivers
have been volunteering with the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Brown County for 30 years. Every week, the ADRC provides a hot lunch to more than 450 home-bound seniors. The hot meal is delivered by these volunteers. Without them, this "Meals on Wheels" program would not be successful in serving these individuals in need of a daily nutritious meal. In addition, these volunteer drivers provide the meal recipient with daily socialization and they are able to ensure family members that their loved one has had a daily check-in.
Because the ADRC has volunteers willing to serve Meals on Wheels to seniors in our community each week day, these seniors are able to receive at least one hot, healthy meal which they wouldn't otherwise get. Many of these seniors are not able to stand at the oven, stove or microwave to prepare their own meal. With the meal they receive, they are able to build up their nutritional strength which ultimately leads to less hospitalizations, and also quicker recoveries post-hospitalization. Overall, this program and especially the volunteers help people stay in their home and out of long-term care facilities.
