ADRC Homebound Meal Volunteer Drivers are our volunteers of the week!

Consider this: you are elderly, live alone, are homebound, are unable to prepare meals for yourself, have no family to help with meal preparation or with shopping, and do not live in a complex that provides meals. This is where ADRC's Homebound Meal Drivers come in. The Aging and Disability Resource Center serves almost 400 meals daily through their Homebound Meal Program, better known as Meals on Wheels. All that is asked of their participants is a donation that is within their means.

There are currently close to 250 volunteer meal drivers that serve most of Brown County. They deliver almost 400 meals daily to individuals who are eligible for the program. Each driver uses their own vehicle, however, mileage reimbursement is provided upon request. Volunteers deliver meals Monday through Friday at 11 a.m., with the exception of holidays and when there are school closures due to inclement weather. Almost 140 of the volunteers have been delivering meals for over 5 years and the average driver is 68 years young! In 2016, in there were almost 100,000 meals were served to over 900 eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities. Homebound drivers donated almost 16,000 hours of time and drove a total of 35,000 miles to deliver these meals.

The ADRC's vision is to build a community that values, empowers, and supports seniors, adults with disabilities, and their caregivers. They provide advocacy and services that support independence and personal choice. Many of the recipients of Homebound Meals would not be able to continue living independently without this program. Not only do the participants benefit from receiving meals, they are also meeting other people on a daily basis. 55% who receive meals say seeing the volunteer gives them an opportunity to have someone to talk to.

These volunteers are not looking for recognition or reward for what they do. They volunteer because they want to give back to the community and help those in need. They volunteer because they enjoy the experience of making someone smile when they receive their meal. They volunteer because the Homebound Meal Program helped their mother or father in the past when they were the exhausted caregiver.

Thank you to ADRC Homebound Meal Volunteer Drivers for making an impact in the lives of so many!
