Volunteer of the Week
St. Vincent de Paul Computer Crew is our volunteer of the week!

The Computer Crew has been part of an ongoing volunteer effort for nearly 20 years! It currently has three crew members. One of the two co-founders of the computer "department" is Don Woelz. After retiring from the IT department that he founded at Fort Howard Paper Company, Don brought the then-new computer technology - and a new opportunity - to St. Vincent de Paul. He suggested that the store add cleaned and repaired donated computers to its array of offerings. Many of Don's early compadres have passed away, but Don remains the same dedicated volunteer. Joining the crew nearly nine years ago is Jerry Schoen. With his background at IBM and large-size office printers, Jerry completed the team, offering his expertise in printers and ink cartridges. Newcomer, Ed Thompson with eight years of service is the "take apart man." Ed salvages non-working computers and printers for scrap, opening a new source of revenue for indirectly helping the poor.

The Computer Crew's cleaning and repairing of computers and printers for sale in the thrift stores not only provides a stream of revenue for the not-for-profit stores, but it benefits persons in need with a source for purchasing good, reliable used computers/printers for a fair, low price. If they say the computer works, it works as good as new. They are caring. They want to do the best job for the good of the organization and for the people it serves. Additionally, the Computer Crew helps St. Vincent de Paul be a good steward of the environment.

As previously stated, the Computer Crew has been part of an ongoing volunteer effort for nearly 20 years and these three volunteers remain. Don Woelz has amassed over 4,047 total hours during his 20 years of service. Jerry Schoen has accumulated a total of 3,290 hours during his nine years of service, and Ed Thompson has accrued a total of 4,904 hours during his eight years of volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul. Since its inception, the Computer Crew has amassed over 12,241 hours of volunteering -- an equivalent of 1.5 years of nonstop volunteering. This crew has provided a steady, new stream of income for St. Vincent de Paul's not-for-profit thrift stores. The greater income for their stores means more monetary aide dispersed to friends in need in Brown County.

Thank you Computer Crew for your camaraderie and your ongoing effort in helping those in need!

Parent Pals, a volunteer program of Brown County Health & Human Services Department

Parent Pals, a program offered through the Brown County Health & Human Services Department, works with parents of parents who need guidance and support. Our mission is to mentor the parents of families who are in need of learning daily living skills, emotional support, how to organize their household, or how to budget money and pay bills. With the direction volunteer coordinator and Parent Pal, we empower parents to create safe and healthy households for their families by providing the tools, training and community connections that allow families an opportunity to thrive. We match volunteers with parents based on compatibility. Volunteer mentors meet regularly with parents to share struggles and receive coaching in a non-threatening environment. Additional training is provided by the Health & Human Services Department.
