Andi Krawczyk is our Volunteer of the Week
as well as our WPS Volunteer Youth Award Runner-Up
!
Children, teens and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities face many challenges. Hippotherapy is a powerful medical intervention that can dramatically improve their ability to learn, move and function. At Exceptional Equestrians, it has changed lives for children who couldn't sit up, walk or speak. To be able to provide horseback therapies, help from committed and reliable volunteers is crucial. Each riding session requires a team of two to three volunteers for each client. Because of Andi's service and commitment, children and adults with disabilities have been able to receive horseback therapies to improve their cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being for a lifetime.
Andi helps provide client services. She helps children and adults with disabilities receive horseback therapies by volunteering weekly as a horse leader and as a side walker during riding sessions. Andi grooms and tacks the therapy horses to prepare them for riding, she leads the horses while clients ride, and returns them to their paddocks afterward. As a side walker, she walks alongside the rider for safety and assists the rider during activities. Andi's outstanding service in the barn and her initiative to advocate for Exceptional Equestrians in the community earned her the Youth Volunteer of the Year award at Exceptional Equestrians in 2017.
A boy that Andi helps came to Exceptional Equestrians after a trying kindergarten school year. His parents described struggles with transitions, following directions, and participating. It was a year filled with concerning phone calls and emails from his teachers. After a summer of therapeutic riding, when he started 1st grade, his parents received a number of emails from his school. This time, though, they were all to compliment how hard he was working, how much progress he had made, and how well he was handling transitions at school. His speech teacher couldn't believe he was the same boy. "What he has gained from your program is nothing short of amazing," said his mother who made a special point to thank "the amazing volunteers." Kudos to Andi for her selfless service that has made a difference in the life of this boy, his family, his classmates, and school community.
Thank you, Andi, for your outstanding commitment to assisting those with disabilities!
