30th Anniversary WPS Volunteer Awards
|
The 30
th
Annual WPS Volunteer Awards were held on the morning of Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the KI Convention Center. The awards program is the result of a partnership between Wisconsin Public Service and The Volunteer Center of Brown County. The WPS Volunteer Awards recognize and celebrate individuals and groups who volunteer in the community for a wide variety of nonprofits. Over 1,700 local volunteers were nominated for one of eight awards sponsored by local businesses. The event is the largest in Brown County that honors the impact that volunteers have in the community. The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation joined in supporting the event by a Community Impact sponsorship increasing the award amounts to $1,000 for the recipients and $500 for the runners-up, which are gifted to the nonprofits of the winner’s choice. The Youth winners receive personal scholarships. Check upcoming editions of the Volunteer Connect to see this year's recipients and runners up.

Founders Group of the Oral Health Partnership are our Volunteers of the Week!
The Founders Group of the Oral Health Partnership are our Volunteers of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Small Group Runner Up.
Rarely have the words of Margaret Mead rung as true than when they applied to the founding board members of the Oral Health Partnership (OHP), "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it's the only thing that ever has." Just over a decade ago, our communities' most at risk children were rushed to emergency rooms with severe, life-threatening , and completely preventable dental problems. One out of every three missed school days in Green Bay was due to dental pain -- back then the leading cause of missed school days! These kids suffered from horrible dental pain which many experienced for most of their lives. Untreated decay led to deadly abscesses and many tears shed. Worse yet, the ER's did not have dentists on staff, and so issues were treated with penicillin and minor surgeries, but not fixed. Why were poor children ending up in Green Bay's ER's, screaming in pain with desperate parents?
Green Bay, and the surrounding communities in Brown County, had a big problem with little kid's teeth. Like most large-scale intractable social problems, the factors that caused this situation were complex and not easily solved. In 2008, Wisconsin reimbursed dentists among the nation's lowest compensation rate for Medicaid dental. That low rate combined with other challenges kept most Wisconsin dentists from offering services to low-income children. Dentists have big hearts, and would volunteer services, but those efforts still left thousands of children without access to proper and regular dental care.
Other barriers to care involved space, equipment, and delivery constraints. The dental equipment needed to treat these children costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. At the time they started, these volunteers had no space available to see children, let alone the expensive equipment and dentists to perform treatment. That daunting community need, thousands of children aged 0-19 frequenting emergency rooms with dental pain, and the complete lack of money, space, and people to help these kids, is what the five founding members of the OHP faced.
By way of background information, fast forward to today in 2018, the Oral Health Partnership offers three full dental clinics on the east side, west side and centrally in Green Bay. OHP treats about 100 uninsured or under-insured children every weekday! They also offer two school-based teams that provide in-school dental teams to multiple school districts in and around Brown County. OHP has partnered with hospitals for treatment when more severe cases require anesthesia. The growth - from nothing to a 50 person dental not-for-profit - has been a journey with much work along the way.
Thank you, Founders of the Oral Health Partnership, for filling this HUGE community need!

Join the Movement: Become an Advocate with the Sexual Assault Center!
|
Are you looking for a way to stand with survivors and make a lasting impact on our community? The Sexual Assault Center that serves Brown, Oconto, Door, & Marinette Counties, is looking for individuals to join their volunteer team! No experience is necessary. All advocates receive extensive training prior to working with victims of Sexual Violence. Our new training program prepares advocates and is more flexible for those with busy schedules. Self-paced learning modules combined with on-site training and shadowing experiences prepare advocates for this work. Advocates play an important role in victims’ healing process as they not only field incoming hotline calls through hotline, but also respond to hospitals or police stations to provide immediate support and information. Interns provide additional support and legal advocacy. Volunteers sign up for two shifts each month that work with their schedule and attend monthly meetings with other advocates, to maintain protocols and expand knowledge.
Available shifts:
Weekday Nights: 5pm-7am
Weekend Days: 7am-7pm
Weekend Nights: 7pm-7am
