Volunteer of the Week
Rod Leadley is our Volunteer of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Heart of Gold Lifetime Achievement Award Runner-Up !

Rod has been a volunteer with Exceptional Equestrians for the past 14 years, working with the organization to provide horseback therapy to children, teens and adults. Because of both his horsemanship experience and can-do attitude, Rod provides many valuable services to the organization, including leading therapy horses during riding sessions; grooming, tacking, and feeding the horses; and helping out in the stable. To be able to provide hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, at least two or three volunteers are needed per riding session. Because of Rod's enduring commitment to volunteer service, families in Northeast Wisconsin have access to a powerful interventional tool that can dramatically improve the quality of life of individuals with disabilities. Rod has volunteered over 600 hours in the years he has been with Exceptional Equestrians. An ambassador for Exceptional Equestrians in the community, Rod helps to recruit new volunteers and supporters. Rod said, "I encourage people to get involved. There's a real sense of fulfillment and accomplishment."

A retired teacher and coach from the Green Bay Public School district, Rod says that he has always had a soft spot for children with real struggles. In his words, "Helping these kids ride each week, I get to see them as people, rather than their handicaps. I get to know their personalities and how to interact with each individual. They do a lot for me, too." Through his work with Exceptional Equestrians, Rod has impacted the lives of hundreds of people. Here's a story to give you a glimpse of Rod's true impact. In this instance, Rod helped a young girl defy the odds. Rod first met Aliyah when she was two years old and limited in her mobility due to Cerebral Palsy and autism. Leading her therapy horse during riding sessions, Rod helped Aliyah reach a milestone her doctors said she never would accomplish: Aliyah learned to walk.

Thank you, Rod, for your ongoing commitment to those you serve at Exceptional Equestrians!
