Volunteer of the Week
Darrell Kuntz is our volunteer of the week!

Darrell started his service with Exceptional Equestrians more than three years ago. Darrel helps kids and adults with disabilities receive horseback therapies by assisting during hippotherapy and therapeutic riding as a horse leader and as a side walker. As a horse leader, Darrell grooms and tacks the therapy horse and leads the horse while the client rides. As a side walker, he walks alongside the rider for safety and assists the rider during activities. Darrell is their most reliable volunteer, only ever missing a shift for a family emergency. He even takes time off work to help at special events like the summer horse show and Christmas in the Barn, when many helping hands are needed.

He has logged more than 530 hours of service at Exceptional Equestrians. Last year Darrell logged 214 hours. He selflessly makes time to volunteer two and three days a week while working a full time job that is physically taxing. He is an equestrian and has a horse of his own. Knowing that Exceptional Equestrians has a great need for volunteers with horsemanship experience, Darrell spends a major chunk of his free time at Exceptional Equestrians helping others ride when he could be riding his own horse.

Because of Darrell's commitment, children and adults with disabilities have been able to receive hippotherapy to improve their cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being. One of the many clients that Darrell helps is three-year-old Joey. Joey has Spina Bifida, which limits his mobility. With Darrell's help, therapists use hippotherapy to help Joey strengthen his core, and he has started crawling--something Joey had never done before. Another client that Darrell helps is five-year-old Ethan. Ethan survived a heart attack at the age of two that left him unable to move. Darrell side walks while Ethan rides for hippotherapy. Ethan is working on being able to lean and reach, and one of his favorite games while he is riding horseback is leaning over to give Darrell a friendly bop on the head. Ethan has made huge strides in his therapy, which has impacted his quality of life and that of his family.

Because of Darrell's outstanding commitment to volunteer service, more kids and adults with disabilities in Northeast Wisconsin than ever before can count on weekly hippotherapy and therapeutic riding at Exceptional Equestrians. By generously sharing his time, Darrell makes it possible for Exceptional Equestrians to provide hippotherapy and therapeutic riding year round and to maximize its capacity to meet the needs of each individual and family that seeks its services. Darrell has even made personal connections with each of the many clients he helps. When he found out that the mother of one of his favorite riders had lost her job, Darrell was concerned that the three-year-old girl might miss the hippotherapy that helps her with her symptoms of Cerebral Palsy. He privately wrote a check to pay for the coming months of therapies so the family would not have the extra worry.

Thank you Darrell for your generosity and dedication to those with disabilities in our community!
