Friends of the Brown County Library - Board of Directors is our Volunteer of the Week!
The Friends of the Brown County Library (FBCL) are people like you who value books, reading, education, and the continued pursuit of knowledge. The board of directors for the FBCL works throughout the year to accomplish the mission of the organization, which is promoting literacy, managing the Friends sponsored programs and leading fundraising projects to support the goal of creating the best library system in the country.
The group is able to provide the funds for the library to purchase additional innovative technology, trying new processes and equipment to support the increased efficiency of the library staff and support the ideas of the library staff. These are things that would not be covered in the county budget and yet make the library the best possible place for our entire community.
The board of directors manages many Friends' projects including Give-A-Kid-A-Book and the "Born to Read" program. The Give-A-Kid-A-Book program has been a project of the Friends since 1997, which gives over 10,000 books annually to children from low-income families in the community. The group collects, sorts and distributes these books each year during the holiday season. Literacy is vital to a child's scholastic success, yet in Brown County, 38% of our lower income students are not reading at grade level in 3rd grade. The Friends board is trying to change that statistic. The "Born to Read" program campaign began in 1996. It encourages new parents to read to their babies to give them a head start on language development and other basic skills. Pediatric research indicates that early positive exposure to children's books, especially through reading aloud, helps children learn to read. Children's experiences of being read to are the single most important predictors of later reading success. Reading kits are distributed at the area's four hospitals to parents with babies born during National Library Week in April. The kits contain a puppet, finger-play booklet, and a library card application. The board has supported literacy efforts within the community, the library staff's ideas, efficiency and needs and the library system and its clients.
Thank you, Friends board, for being true supporters of literacy in our community!
