Volunteer of the Week
Fred Huempfner is our Volunteer of the Week!

St. Vincent de Paul offers tangible, direct person-to-person assistance to the poor and marginalized in Brown County. St. Vincent de Paul members (called Vincentians) volunteer in pairs to visit those in need in their homes and offer customized assistance and service to them. Since its beginning in France in 1833 and in Green Bay in 1957, this personalized involvement makes the work of St. Vincent de Paul unique. Funds for assistance are secured through the sale of donated items at three thrift stores. Behind the scenes and at the stores are other dedicated volunteers who prepare donated items for sale or volunteer in the stores. Their volunteer service helps St. Vincent de Paul help people.

One of the most outgoing and energetic volunteers at the East side store is 79 year old Fred Huempfner. Fred is known by customers, staff and volunteers alike as "Fred, the cart pusher." His volunteer job is not glamorous, as he collects stray shopping carts and puts them away. He also gathers abandoned shopping carts from across the street and brings them back to the store, as well as finding (and, at times, reinforces with tape) boxes for customers. Rather, It is Fred's sociability and enthusiasm that makes him a "fan favorite." Fred focuses on brightening the atmosphere for his St. Vincent de Paul 'family.'

Fred has amassed 7,200 hours of volunteer service in his 14 plus years of volunteering for St. Vincent de Paul. That translates to more than 500 hours per year, even though Fred takes a yearly vacation during months with snow (generally January through mid-March). His five days a week/three hours a day have added up over the years.

Thank you, Fred, for brightening the atmosphere of St. Vincent de Paul!

Join the Movement: Become an Advocate with the Sexual Assault Center!
Are you looking for a way to stand with those survivors and make a lasting impact on our community? The Sexual Assault Center that serves Brown, Oconto, Door, & Marinette Counties, is looking for individuals to join their volunteer team! No experience is necessary. All advocates receive extensive training prior to working with victims of Sexual Violence. Our new training program prepares advocates and is more flexible for those with busy schedules. Self-paced learning modules combined with on-site training and shadowing experiences prepare advocates for this work. Advocates play an important role in victims’ healing process as they not only field incoming hotline calls through hotline, but also respond to hospitals or police stations to provide immediate support and information. Interns provide additional support and legal advocacy. Volunteers sign up for two shifts each month that work with their schedule and attend monthly meetings with other advocates, to maintain protocols and expand knowledge.

Available shifts:
Weekday Nights: 5pm-7am
Weekend Days: 7am-7pm
Weekend Nights: 7pm-7am

Next on-site training dates in May!
