Give A Kid A Book Leadership Team
is our volunteer of the week!
Give A Kid A Book is an annual program in its 26th year. It was started in 1989 by library staff and then taken over by the Friends of the Brown County Library. The Friends of the Brown County Library are people like you who value books, reading, education, and the continued pursuit of knowledge. They recognize the vital role the Brown County Library plays in making sure that local residents have lifelong access to these resources.
Each year, over 10,000 books are distributed through the Give A Kid A Book program to low-income families through the Salvation Army Toys for Tots Christmas program. This leadership team, which has been in place for over 5 years, has been responsible for the successful recruiting and retention of program sponsors like Brown County Community Women's Club, Nicolet Bank, Barnes & Noble and the Reader's Loft. They also continue to work with the Green Bay Packers to ensure the project benefits from the support of a Packer wife as the project's celebrity spokesperson.
These ladies coordinate a year round project to ensure that all registered families are able to receive 2 books per child. They start reconciling the previous year's activities in January, and in February and March, they start to schedule dates for the kick-off-event, book collection dates and distribution timing. In April and May they secure or confirm sponsors and the summer is spent updating the advertising plan, working with the Packers' wives, and planning the media campaign.
The Friends of the Brown County Library could not possibly manage to maintain this program without the Give A Kid A Book leadership team. Their efforts to support young readers would not be as successful without this program. Literacy is vital to a child's scholastic success, yet in Brown County, 38% of our lower income students are not reading at grade level in 3rd grade. Through this program, they are hoping to change that.
This team of women have been life-long supporters of the Library and education. They utilize their knowledge, background and love of books to assist the children of our community to become readers. It is known that children who become readers during their earlier years will do better throughout school.
Thank you leadership team for guiding our youth in the community to become better readers!
