VounteeroftheWeekVolunteer of the Week
Michael Schwartz-Oscar is our volunteer of the week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Adult Runner Up!

Michael has been volunteering with Community Circles of Support for the past three years and during that time, has logged over 500 hours. Community Circles of Support is a program that was formed in 2006 to respond to the need of men and women returning to our communities from prison. In the past ten years, they have served close to 2,000 individuals who have served time in prison and are eager to rejoin the community as law abiding citizens.

Not only is Michael a Circles volunteer, but he is also a Group Leader for the Green Bay Area Men's Circle. He attends weekly support group meetings and gives pro-social support to their participants which means guiding, mentoring, asking questions, giving feedback, role modeling, listening, encouraging, cheer-leading and holding them accountable for poor choices and reinforcing good choices. When inmates are released from prison, they face huge obstacles. They often are not educated, lack employment history, struggle with addictions and mental illness, have errors in their judgement and thoughts, and lack a positive support system. Circles of Support attempts to mitigate these barriers to success by offering a safe place to come to discuss and possibly resolve these issues.

Michael immediately stepped in as a group facilitator and created structure which was sorely missing. He gently set boundaries in a non-threatening way which was easily accepted by our participants once in place. Michael shows tireless dedication to the Circles program and its prime objective of supporting those exiting the Wisconsin correctional system. His leadership saw many volunteers and participants come and go through the Circle's doors but with each new arrival, Michael provided the same level of enthusiasm and encouragement as he did for those who had come before.

Michael has been a significant change agent for Circles of Support when he first came on board with them over 3 years ago. Much of it done quietly so most involved were not aware.

Michael has a servant's heart and Circles of Support has been fortunate to be the recipient of this gift he has been granted.

Thank you Michael for all that you do and for all those you help so willingly!
