30th Anniversary WPS Volunteer Awards
|
The 30
th
Annual WPS Volunteer Awards were held on the morning of Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the KI Convention Center. The awards program is the result of a partnership between Wisconsin Public Service and The Volunteer Center of Brown County. The WPS Volunteer Awards recognize and celebrate individuals and groups who volunteer in the community for a wide variety of nonprofits. Over 1,700 local volunteers were nominated for one of eight awards sponsored by local businesses. The event is the largest in Brown County that honors the impact that volunteers have in the community. The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation joined in supporting the event by a Community Impact sponsorship increasing the award amounts to $1,000 for the recipients and $500 for the runners-up, which are gifted to the nonprofits of the winner’s choice. The Youth winners receive personal scholarships. Check upcoming editions of the Volunteer Connect to see this year's recipients and runners up.

Literacy Green Bay Adult Tutors are our Volunteers of the Week!
Literacy Green Bay Adult Tutors are our Volunteers of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Large Group Runner-Up.
In 1981, when the first Southeast Asian refugees were being resettled in our area, many area residents volunteered to help the adults learn English and learn about living in the United States. They met in each other's homes and the volunteers taught them not only the alphabet and survival English, but also life skills such as grocery shopping, talking to a doctor and studying to get a drivers' license. They were the first volunteer tutors for Literacy Green Bay. Many of them later were also board members and formed a new nonprofit called the Literacy Council of Brown County. As the years passed, the tutors also began assisting any immigrants looking to learn English and any under-educated or low skilled adults who wanted to improve their literacy skills. Today, Literacy Green Bay's volunteer tutors work with adult learners from 41 countries and many others who left high school are now seeking a GED. Some of the volunteers will take additional training so they can work with individuals preparing for the naturalization (US citizenship) interview.
The volunteer tutors begin by first attending an orientation followed by a 12-hour tutor training workshop to learn how to tutor an adult learner. During the training, they are matched with an adult learner. Tutors are asked to give a year's commitment and to meet for about 2-3 hours a week with their learner. The instructional time does not include any extra hours that many spend preparing their lessons. Most tutors will spend an additional hour per week prepping for their lessons and tailoring their instruction to their learners' interests and abilities. They often incorporate additional material that addresses life skills or learners' personal goals, such as assisting them with job searches and completing applications, or helping them with money management or household budgeting. In addition to tutoring, the volunteers are required to turn in monthly reports, documenting their hours of instruction, lessons taught, student progress and any accomplishments that month. After every 50 hours of instruction, they arrange for their learners to be reassessed. Although this is not a part of the job description, tutors often find themselves acting as advocates, advisers, references or interpreters as they form a trusting relationship with their learners and want to see them succeed.
Thank you, Literacy Green Bay Adult Tutors, for your continued efforts in making sure the learners succeed!

Join the Movement: Become an Advocate with the Sexual Assault Center!
|
Are you looking for a way to stand with survivors and make a lasting impact on our community? The Sexual Assault Center that serves Brown, Oconto, Door, & Marinette Counties, is looking for individuals to join their volunteer team! No experience is necessary. All advocates receive extensive training prior to working with victims of Sexual Violence. Our new training program prepares advocates and is more flexible for those with busy schedules. Self-paced learning modules combined with on-site training and shadowing experiences prepare advocates for this work. Advocates play an important role in victims’ healing process as they not only field incoming hotline calls through hotline, but also respond to hospitals or police stations to provide immediate support and information. Interns provide additional support and legal advocacy. Volunteers sign up for two shifts each month that work with their schedule and attend monthly meetings with other advocates, to maintain protocols and expand knowledge.
Available shifts:
Weekday Nights: 5pm-7am
Weekend Days: 7am-7pm
Weekend Nights: 7pm-7am
Next on-site training dates are May 16, 23 and 30!
Apply today to reserve your spot and start the process of becoming a volunteer victim advocate!
