Lauren Schultz is our volunteer of the week!
For several years, Lauren has volunteered as a stage manager for various productions at Evergreen Theater. This is a thankless but vital job when putting on a production. The stage manager is in charge of the flow of a show, making sure the lights come on when they are supposed to, the sound effects happen at the right time, the set pieces are changed out quickly, and the actors are in place. Lauren has stepped up to the plate multiple times to fill this role and has become one of the best at it.
In addition, Lauren put her project management skills to use when Evergreen purchased and moved into Keller Elementary. She was one of two project managers leading the massive task of getting everything from the old space to the new. Every weekend for almost two months, Lauren recruited volunteers, picked up a moving truck, organized items to be moved, and oversaw the entire operation. In someone else's hands, this enormous task may have taken four to six months if it wasn't organized and didn't have the right volunteers. With Lauren's leadership, it went smoothly, and the building was up and running in no time. Throughout the process, she made everyone who took part feel appreciated, and she helped transform Keller into a welcoming and workable space for theater and arts programming for our community.
For years, Lauren's father worked with Evergreen as a sound designer and board member before passing away suddenly in 2019. He was always a hard worker and a cherished volunteer just as she has become. It is not difficult to think her father would be very proud of her. Thank you, Lauren, for all you do!

CASA Volunteer Training - October 6, 13, and 20
Every child deserves someone who shows up for them. When children experience abuse, neglect, or uncertainty, their world can change in ways no child should have to navigate alone. During these challenging times, having a consistent, caring adult in their corner can make all the difference. A CASA volunteer provides something every child deserves: a relationship built on trust, stability, and support. Through regular weekly visits, just one hour at a time, CASA volunteers get to know a child, listen to what matters to them, learn about their hopes and challenges, and advocate for their best interests throughout the court process. The next CASA volunteer training class begins in October, and they are looking for community members who are ready to be that steady presence for a child. You don't need to have all the answers, you simply need the willingness to show up, listen, and make a meaningful difference through consistency and connection. Because every child deserves to know they are seen, they are heard, and they are not facing difficult moments alone.
Becoming a CASA volunteer is a journey, and you don't have to take the first step alone. If you're ready to make a meaningful impact in the life of a child right here in our community, CASA would love the opportunity to connect with you, answer your questions, and guide you through the process of becoming an advocate. Training class: October 6, 13, and 20, 5:30-8:30 pm each evening. Minimum age: 21. Click here to learn more.

Companion Volunteers
Sometimes, the greatest gift is simply being there. Unity is looking for companion volunteers who are willing to share their time and presence with patients living with serious illness. For someone facing a serious illness, a familiar face and a caring conversation can mean so much. Your weekly visit can become something a patient looks forward to and is a chance to talk, laugh, share stories, or simply enjoy having someone there. As a companion volunteer, you may:
- Spend meaningful time visiting and socializing with a patient
- Listen, talk, share stories, play a game, or simply sit together
- Provide companionship and connection for patients who may feel isolated
- Give caregivers a much-needed break and an opportunity for respite
Visits may take place in a patient's home, nursing home, assisted living facility, or at Meng Hospice Residence. Unity is a not-for-profit partnership of Bellin Health, St. Mary's HSHS, and St. Vincent HSHS, caring for patients with serious illnesses while supporting their caregivers and families. Your presence can make a difference. You don't need to have all the answers. You don't need to know exactly what to say. You just need to be willing to show up, week after week, and be there. A weekly visit can bring comfort, and a sense of connection during a difficult time. For a patient and their family, knowing that someone is coming to see them can mean more than you may ever realize. If you have time in your week and a heart for people, Unity would love to hear from you. Join this volunteer team and discover how simply being there can make a lasting difference. Various shifts. Minimum age: 18.
