Volunteers Needed: Christmas in July Half-Marathon & 5K!

We’re looking for energetic, cheerful volunteers to help at the Christmas in July Half-Marathon & 5K a success on Sunday, July 13, 2025!

Resale Boutique Support Volunteer

Are you looking to give back, be part of a fun and supportive team, and help a good cause? Dayton & Co – A Resale Boutique is seeking volunteers to help keep our store running smoothly and beautifully!

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Assisting with receiving and processing donations
• Helping with the rough sorting of goods (clothing, home items, etc.)
• Providing general support around the store (tidying, organizing, assisting with displays)
• Finding your niche! We want our volunteers to discover what they enjoy most – whether it’s merchandising, pricing, organizing, or creating displays – and make that role their own.

For example, love purses? You could take charge of the purse section – keep the display looking beautiful, organized, and stocked with the best bags we have. We want you to take pride in it and make it shine!

What We’re Looking For:

• A positive attitude and willingness to help
• Ability to take direction and work independently

Every animal that found a home, every pet that came through our doors—you were part of it. From cleaning kennels to cuddling kittens, from greeting visitors to helping at events—you made this possible.

*How long have you been with the organization?

I’ve been with the Humane Society since October 2022.

*What inspired you to work in an animal-related field?

I’ve always loved animals! Growing up, my dad had all kinds of pets, dogs, cats, ferrets, snakes... You name it. If it had scales, fur, or feathers, I probably had one at some point in my childhood.

*Do you have any pets of your own? Tell us about them!

Yes, I have five amazing pets!

• Smaug and Mushu are my bearded dragons. Smaug is a tripod with just three legs, and Mushu is my grumpy geriatric old man.
• Molly and Zora are my dogs. Molly is a sweet golden doodle who's a frequent flyer at our vet hospital thanks to her stubborn ear infections. Zora is my goofy standard poodle who freezes like a statue whenever she meets new people.
• Then there’s Bonsai, my redfoot tortoise. He’s likely older than I am, acts like a messy toddler, but is super social and loves attention.

*What’s your favorite type of content to post or create for social media?

I really enjoy creating our long-form success story videos and educational content. It’s so rewarding to see the positive impact we have in the community, and I love learning new things about animals that I can share with others.

*Any tips for capturing the perfect pet photo or video?

Be patient and keep filming! You can usually get a good photo quickly, but if you give the animal time to settle, you’ll often capture something truly great. With video, it’s usually right after you almost stop recording that something amazing happens. So let it roll as long as you can!

*What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

Most people are surprised when I mention I have a pet tortoise 😂 But here’s another fun fact: I’ve been doing graphic and multimedia design since high school. I have an associate's degree in Visual Communications, and I currently serve on the design advisory board for Sinclair Community College.

*If you were a wild animal, what would you be?

If I were a wild animal, I’d be an okapi, basically a giraffe with a normal neck and zebra stripes. They’re rare, unique, and were once thought to be mythical creatures. What’s not to love?

*How long have you been part of our Feline Pawd Squad?

I have been a part of the shelter squad for about 4 months (since February).

*What made you say, “Yep, I want to hang out with a bunch of furry goofballs and scoop litter”?

I adopted my kitty from HSGD when I first moved here for work. She became such a huge part of my life, and I wanted to find a way to give back to the other kitties that I couldn't adopt. Volunteering has been a great way for me to do this, and it has greatly improved my mental health.

*Got any animals at home who secretly think they run the place? Tell us about them!

At home, I have my kitty Isla. I got her from HSGD when I first moved here in July of last year. She definitely runs the house. We eat together, we sleep together, and you better bet we play together when she wants to. She's a massive character that will steal your lap (and your food). She's a tortie with the classic tortitude. What more can I say?

*Which shelter animal totally stole your heart? (We promise not to tell the others.)

Eve (or Evie, as I call her) the cat has 100% stolen my heart (probably because she reminds me of mine). She's so playful and sweet. She's a little shy at first, but give her some booty scratches and she's all over you, asking for more love. She purrs so softly and gives little mews when you walk away without giving her enough pets. Chevy and Adam are also great guys, but Evie takes the cake.

*What song would play during your dramatic slow-mo entrance into the shelter?

I think Mr. Bluesky by ELO would play because it's a happy, high-energy song. And I definitely bring a lot of energy into the shelter when I come in.

*What’s your volunteer superpower? (Example: Making shy cats feel brave, walking 3 dogs at once without falling down, etc.)

I'd say my superpower is being able to bring sweet but skittish cats out of their shell. My specialty is definitely cats that want to be friendly but are just freaked out by the shelter environment. I've learned how to speak softly to bring cats out of their shell. I can usually get the cats out and ready to be pet. 

*What is your day job?

I am a government civilian that works at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. I'm an Operations Research analyst, which means that I do math and code all day (so super nerdy stuff).
