Volunteers contribute $203.4 billion to the United States through their time, talent, and effort in 2019.
“Volunteerism has been a driving force in the strength and power of our civil society since this country’s founding,” said Dan Cardinali, president and CEO of
Independent Sector in Washington, D.C. “We know that giving of our time, talent, and effort transforms organizations, communities, and our nation, and also has profound effects on the individuals giving their time. The Value of Volunteer Time gives us just one concrete measure to illustrate the power of individuals to transform communities.” The latest value of a volunteer hour is
$25.43 – up 3% from the previous year. That figure, estimated from data collected in 2018, shows the incredible contributions volunteers make to their communities and our country.
An estimated 63 million Americans volunteer roughly 8 billion hours of their time, contributing approximately $203.4 billion in time to nonprofit organizations of all types. The data is from
Independent Sector’s annual value of volunteer time study.
Total volunteer hours are up, but the percentage of people who volunteer is declining. According to the University of Maryland’s Do Good Institute, the volunteer rate nationally has dropped from about 29 percent to roughly 25 percent. Based on an adult population of 252 million, that means a decrease of more than 10 million American volunteers.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic the Census is still happening, and it's more important than ever that we make sure everyone in Lake County is counted. You can help with this important task virtually be encouraging everyone in your circle of influence to fill out their census. The census can be filled out online, over the phone, or via the mail. You can help by promoting the census on social media, via email, and through conversations with your friends, family, and coworkers.
Why is the Census so important? It provides the government with an official count of the population of our county. That helps the government decide how much funding we should receive for our schools, our hospitals, social services, and other vital needs in the community. By not getting an accurate count of the households in our communities we risk harming everyone by under-funding valuable services. To learn more about the census visit their website
