Volunteering During COVID-19: Is It Safe?
With the Coronavirus pandemic the world is facing, the need for volunteers and community activism is growing. Many individuals and families are without jobs or steady income, or unable to find food and other basic needs due to business/school closures and store shortages.
Not only are nonprofits, churches and community organizations around the nation stepping up, but kindhearted people who simply want to make a difference are eager to find ways to give back. At a time when the nation is urged to practice social distancing, is volunteering safe? The short answer is ‘yes – as safe as we make it.’

Unity In Our Community Week 2020
We know with the current crisis it is hard to even begin to imagine what our world will look like in August, but we want to take a little bit of time this month to try and do just that.
This is the time of year when we traditionally start planning Unity in Our Community Week. Unity In Our Community takes the place of our traditional Day of Caring, and is a week long push to get volunteers out into the community and giving back. We work with many local nonprofits all across the county to post a variety of projects on VolunteerLakeCounty.org so that volunteers can connect with projects taking place that week. Traditionally many of these projects are in-person projects, and can range in size from requiring only a handful of volunteers to several hundred volunteers.
This year is different however. While none of us knowing exactly what this virus is is going to do and how our lives will be impacted by future social distancing measures, we do want to get your feedback on how you feel about volunteering moving forward this year. This will help us decide the best way to structure Unity In Our Community Week as well as any other volunteer events throughout the year. Please take a few moments to answer the questions below honestly and to the best of your ability given the current information we have on the virus.
Do you think we should keep Unity In Our Community Week the first week of August?
If you aren't able to volunteer, but would still like to help those in our community who have been affected by this virus, you can do so by supporting the NWI COVID-19 Community Economic Relief Fund. This fund was created by Lake Area United Way to support our local nonprofits and help meet the increased needs for services that they are seeing. 100% of the funds raised will go to local nonprofit organizations to allow them to better serve our local families in need. So far the fund has raised over $3.2 million through donations from corporate partners and generous individuals throughout the community. We have granted $821,000 to 10 organizations serving people in need due to the virus. Grants continue to be made on a rolling basis.
