Coaching Quick Tips

As you all have seen by now, with the arrival of 20 new fluency titles in January (hooray!), we took the time to reorganize our RAZ Fluency Library using the Lexile Framework. Lexile Measures, which range from 0L to 1700L, provide a more accurate way of matching students to appropriate texts. A Lexile Measure is determined using such criteria as sentence length, word count, vocabulary, and syntax to indicate a text's complexity.

  • Lexile is more closely aligned with the research from the Science of Reading.
  • Both of our school district partners use standardized literacy assessment tools to determine their students' reading abilities. Both of those assessments provide parents and teachers a Lexile range in which a student is reading.
  • Keep in mind that when working to find the next books for your student, you should review books around the Lexile range offered on the Fluency Booklists as well as topics that are of interest to your student.

During this transition time, when first choosing your next fluency book for your student, make sure you:

  • Review Just Right Fluency Book Selection to determine if the book you just finished with your student was a “just right book”.
  • Find the title you just finished in the library lists to determine its Lexile.
  • Select a few new titles in and around that Lexile to offer as options to your student.
  • Pay close attention to ensure this book complexity is "just right" for your student (ex. if the student is making multiple errors on a page, is reading dis-fluently, is reading very slowly, and/or loses their place frequently, the complexity is too hard - choose a lower Lexile).

Note: We are hearing that some people are having trouble finding new RAZ titles in the Hub. We wanted to share some best practices:

  • Double-check entering the correct book titles, some may be phrased slightly differently in the system.
  • Searching by reading level could also help locate the books more easily.
  • Still having trouble locating a book? Email programsupport@literations.org and we can provide the exact naming conventions used in the system.
