Coaching Quick Tips

Breaking the Ice with a Shy Student

The start of the school year can feel intimidating for shy students (or any student!) — and that’s where you come in. A few small moves can help them feel comfortable and start building a strong connection:

  • Start with simple choices (“Which book should we read?”)
  • Notice something positive about them
  • Share a fun fact about yourself
  • Add a playful moment (silly face, quick game)
  • Give them space — sometimes patience is the best icebreaker

These simple moves can help students feel safe and start to open up.
