OCTOBER 13, 2024

JFS Compassionate Companions is our newest program for seniors and disabled individuals. Volunteers provide social and emotional support as they travel with their clients in an Uber to/from non-emergency medical appointments.

Volunteer Chris Brady (pictured on the left) is an invaluable resource, positively impacting lives as a volunteer for both Compassionate Companions and Supermarketing for Seniors. Here's what she has to say:

What is your JFS volunteer experience like? I started about two months ago and help five people. It's nice for them to know that every week, they can count on me. As much as I am giving, I’m receiving in return.

Can you tell us more about Compassionate Companions? You meet clients at their homes, make sure the car arrives, get them to their appointments, and go in with them if necessary. I also help them schedule follow-up appointments and return home safely. Some people are afraid of falling and need assistance getting in and out of the car. I provide an extra level of comfort. One senior always brings me into the doctor’s office because “she only hears what she wants to hear…” I can fill in the gaps for her.

Why should people volunteer for Compassionate Companions? This is a wonderful program…and we are all going to be seniors eventually! I always say I am doing this now so I can pay it forward. Maybe someday I will be a recipient of JFS programs!
