The Virginia Volunteerism and Service Conference is thrilled to announce an outstanding lineup of workshops for 2018!  Highly interactive sessions will be offered in the categories of Capacity Building, Volunteer Management, and Personal & Professional Development. Some of the exciting workshops we have planned include "Serving Vulnerable Populations: What Social Workers Can Teach Volunteer Managers" by Alison Jones-Nassar, "Alignment Isn't Just for Chiropractors: Exploring Organizational Alignment" by Chris Bennett, and "True Stories: Top 10 Volunteer Lessons Learned" by Matthew Peterson.   • Citizen-Sourced Data in Your City from Cities of Service is a new toolkit that helps cities implement initiatives that tap citizens to collect data and help solve pressing local challenges.
  • New County Health Rankings are now available with a new website and lots of great tools and new ways to utilize this information.
  • What Does the New Facebook Newsfeed Mean for Nonprofits examines how the new format will impact nonprofits and others that rely on their Facebook Brand Page to reach their audiences and stakeholders.
  • Canva Nonprofit Program offers free premium accounts for all of their awesome tools for up to 10 members of eligible nonprofit organizations.
  • Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation Grants are available to schools and organizations to turn their ideas into action and make an impact on the issue of childhood hunger on Global Youth Service Day (April 20-22, 2018) and beyond. Deadline: Feb. 12
  • 2018 Winter Causality Brand Grants of $500-$40,000 are available to help your organization update and improve your marketing tools and resources. Deadline: Feb. 16
  • REB Awards for Teaching Excellence will award $4,000-$12,000 professional development grants to Henrico County Public School teachers who have distinguished themselves by their inspiring classroom performance. Deadline: Feb. 26
  • AARP Purpose Prize will award five winners ages 50 and over $60,000 who are using their life experience to make a difference. Deadline: March 6
  • Treatment for Individuals Experiencing Homelessness Grants support the development and/or expansion of the local implementation of an infrastructure that integrates behavioral health treatment and recovery support services for specific populations experiencing homelessness. Deadline: March 9

Could AmeriCorps be the Impactful Solution You've Been Looking For? 

The grant application process for 2018-19 Virginia AmeriCorps State Formula Funding is underway! Does your organization have a passion for service and a desire to develop leaders? With AmeriCorps, local programs design service activities for their team of members serving full- or part-time for one year or during the summer. Sample activities include tutoring and mentoring youth, assisting individuals experiencing homelessness, and restoring parks. To be considered for funding, organizations must meet all eligibility criteria as outlined in the Eligibility Information section of the 2018-19 Virginia AmeriCorps State Formula RFA . T

Breaking News! Special Targeted AmeriCorps Funding Opportunity 

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has announced a Targeted Priority Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) with the focus areas of reducing and/or preventing prescription drug and opioid abuse; child abuse prevention and improving outcomes for foster youth;and working to improve or support improvement of infrastructure. Download the 2018-19 Targeted Priority AmeriCorps NOFO for more information, and watch the Virginia Service website for Virginia's Targeted Priority Request for Applications. Any organization wishing to pursue this funding will be required to apply to the Virginia Service Commission.  Note that the deadline for the Virginia application will be approximately 4 - 6 weeks ahead of the application deadline published in the CNCS NOFO.
Nominations Open for Hanover Spirit of Volunteerism Awards!

Do you know someone who is making a difference in the Hanover County community? The Hanover 2018 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards highlight the contributions and dedication of local volunteers who are making positive impacts on our quality of life. Anyone may nominate inspiring individuals or groups in one of seven categories. All nominees will be recognized and award recipients will be announced at the Spirit of Volunteerism Celebration on Tuesday, May 15th at Hanover High School auditorium. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 16th. Nominate someone today! 
Virginia Kicks Off the
New Year by Serving for  
MLK Day of Service    

Individuals and organizations all over Virginia used their MLK Day holiday, January 15th, as a "day on, not off" serving their communities! Governor Northam spent his first day in office volunteering at Richmond's historic East End and Evergreen Cemeteries. Hundreds of volunteers worked to help clear the overgrown grave sites at the historic African American cemeteries. At other service sites across Virginia, AmeriCorps members and volunteers painted murals for Central Virginia schools, collected and sorted books for students in Arlington and Danville, and served hot meals to homeless individuals in Richmond.

Looking for Someone to Speak to your Group About Service and Volunteerism? We've Got You Covered! 

Members of the Governor's Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism are available to speak at your next meeting or event. The Advisory Board advises the Governor and Cabinet Secretaries on matters relating to volunteerism and national service. Several of the board members are excited to serve on a newly-formed "speaker's bureau" to promote and support volunteerism and service throughout the state. If your organization is interested, contact VirginiaServiceInfo@dss.virginia.gov.
