Thanks for Making the
2019 Volunteerism Conference
a Huge Success!
Nonprofit leaders from throughout Virginia gathered in Richmond, May 7-8, at the Virginia Volunteerism and Service Conference to learn from industry experts and share knowledge with each other. More than 400 individuals attended 30 sessions on topics like fighting the opioid epidemic and strengthening volunteer relationships. At a special awards luncheon at the conference, honors were given to six individuals for their outstanding national service (see story below).
Virginia Honors Outstanding National Service Members
Senior Corps and AmeriCorps members serving in Virginia who have performed outstanding service in their communities were honored on May 7th at the Virginia Volunteerism Conference. The third annual Virginia National Service Awards honored six amazing winners (left to right): 

  • AmeriCorps State Member of the Year: Denise Carl, Richmond Area Healthy Futures Opioid Project
  • Foster Grandparent of the Year: Evelyn Freeman, Peninsula Foster Grandparent Program
  • RSVP Volunteer of the Year: Clyde Roberts, Clinch Valley Community Action Agency
  • Senior Companion of the Year: Rosealee Maxey, Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia
  • AmeriCorps Alumni of the Year: Andrew Richards, Virginia Service and Conservation Corps
  • AmeriCorps VISTA Member of the Year: Crystal Curtis, Appalachian Community Action and Development Agency

Day to Serve is a unique multi-state (Virginia/ Maryland/West Virginia/DC) annual initiative uniting people of all faiths, races, cultures, and backgrounds with the shared goal of helping those in need and improving the communities where we live. Organizations are encouraged to join together with new partners on service projects. Register your project or find a volunteer opportunity on daytoserve.org and justserve.org .
September 11

The National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of efforts, launched in 2002, that promotes community service on and around September 11th as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to plan service projects or take part in planned opportunities -- many of which focus on serving military and first responders.

Virginia Conference on
Refugee Resettlement
Plans are underway for the 2019 Virginia Conference on Refugee Resettlement: Weaving a Network of Services for Virginia’s Newcomers, July 25-26, at Delta Hotels Richmond Downtown by Marriott. The conference will offer workshops and interactive training sessions led by experts in the fields of employment, mental health, health and other disciplines relative to successful refugee integration into communities throughout Virginia.

  • NGen Leadership Award celebrates the accomplishments of visionary changemakers -- age 40 or under -- who have made a difference through innovative, collaborative leadership.



  • Drug-Free Communities Grants seek to establish and strengthen collaboration among organizations to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth. Deadline: July 8
