An Associate General Counsel with AppDynamics, a Cisco company, Denisse volunteered at a recent FEMA appeals clinic for Helene survivors hosted by Cisco in its RTP offices.

After the event, Denisse treated our Pro Bono Programs team to some wonderful, heartfelt, off-the-cuff remarks about the experience.

We weren't quick enough to capture her exact words at the time, so we asked her later if she'd give us the gist. She kindly obliged. Here's what she had to say:

Working on a pro bono project with Legal Aid of North Carolina to assist victims of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina was an incredibly rewarding experience.

It was wonderful to connect directly with individuals in need, providing them with immediate support and the comforting assurance that help was on the way.

The opportunity also fostered team building within our Legal Department, as we worked in small teams of three, which complemented our talents as in-house counsel in project management.

Engaging with the community on such a personal level allowed us to witness firsthand the resilience and strength of those affected.

Sharing moments of hope and solidarity amidst challenges was truly inspiring, and it reinforced the profound impact that compassion and dedicated assistance can have in times of crisis.

Mary recently scored a big win for one of our clients, a survivor of Hurricane Helene.

The storm destroyed our client's home along with the legal documents she needed to prove ownership of it, a prerequisite for securing recovery benefits from FEMA. When her application was denied, our client turned to us for help — and we turned to Mary.

When asked by email if she would help, Mary replied in exactly three minutes. "Yes, I am available!" she wrote. Mary dove right in, helping the client replace her legal documents and appeal FEMA's denial of her application.

Thanks to Mary's selfless service, our client secured more than $30,000 in benefits, which she's putting towards her new, permanent home.

Here at Legal Aid of North Carolina, cases involving out-of-state mineral rights aren't exactly in our wheelhouse. When one such case came through the door last year, we were lucky to be able to call on Paul Yale for help.

An energy lawyer with nearly 50 years of experience in the industry, mostly in Texas, Paul settled in Belmont, Gaston County, in 2022, hanging out his own shingle earlier this year.

Paul has been on our pro bono rolls since 2023, mostly handling criminal record expunctions, wills and advanced directives.

In October, a family member of a woman who had inherited her deceased husband's out-of-state mineral rights came to us with questions.

We didn't know the answers, but we knew who would. We asked Paul if he'd take the case and he readily agreed.

Earlier this month, Paul informed us that he'd sorted things out for our client, who would soon receive a check for nearly $5,000 — "and more checks should be coming after that," Paul assured us.
