Heading Down the Homestretch
|
|
Thanks to all who have taken a shift(s) to staff our July 4th discard stations. We've just three more spots to fill:
one person each from 1-3pm (you'll miss the parade); 3-5pm; and take-down, 5-6:30pm. Please go
here
to help us complete the sign-up.

Rotary Donation Has Begun!
|
|
The more Rotary Recycling Rovers, the merrier. These are the times* when we really need some oomph!:
Sat, June 29: 2-4, 4-6 Please sign up
here
.
Sun, June 30: 2-4, 4-6, 6-8
Mon, July 1: 12-2, 6-8
Tue, July 2: 12-2, 2-4
Wed, July 3: 8-10, 10-12, 12-2, 6-8
Fri, July 5: 8-10, 2-4, 6-8
(*Remember, six hours total June 28 - July 2 lets you purchase early.)
|
|
If those times don't work, choose others. You get free, yummy meals if you're around for lunch and/or dinner.
Also, post-sale packing (Sat, July 6, 2-5pm) is a good time to come because all the regular volunteers are exhausted.

Play the Bainbridge Recycling Quiz!!!
|
|
|
A huge thanks to
Max Hays
,
a recent Bainbridge High School grad who spent well over 50 volunteer hours developing a recycling quiz for Zero Waste. Go to our
web page
and see how many of the 42 everyday objects you can drop in the appropriate discard place. You just might be a recycling superstar!

3 Things You May Not Know about
Curbside Composting
|
|
|
1) You may put
ALL
types of food in your curbside cart.
2) Remove the fruit stickers. They do not degrade so are the bane of a compost facility.
3) If you really want to bag your compostables, you may now use a compostable plastic bag. However, it
must
be imprinted with the symbol below (i.e., be BPI-certified). Also, do
not
knot the bag! The thick knot doesn't decompose fast enough.

Kitsap Solid Waste is a generous partner of Zero Waste. They have provided us with a limited number of sturdy green kitchen caddies, as seen above. If you are interested in composting and would like an effective food scrap container (one nice feature: the handle position keeps the lid locked), please
email Diane
..

at 7pm at the Marge Williams Center.

Plastic Free EcoChallenge
|
|
Are you a team player? Then this EcoChallenge competition, running from July 1-31, may be just up your alley. Based on the premise that it takes three weeks to change a habit, the Northwest Earth Institute offers up a variety of daily (and one-time) actions in different categories that challenge your use of plastic.
Start or join a team, then complete an action and earn points toward your team's total. ZW member Sandy Spears, who just moved to Bainbridge full-time from Houston, is looking for more teammates for her team, "Houston". Go
here
for more details.
