Things have been moving quickly at Volunteer Maine since the last time we caught up with you! Senator Collins paid us a visit, our citizen-led state service commission elected officers for 2020-21, we announced the first batch of AmeriCorps funding for the year, the Maine Volunteer Roll of Honor was published and so much more! We've also included resources to help your organization navigate the pandemic -- and come out swinging. Stay safe, everyone, and be sure to help a neighbor in need. Save the date! Maine Volunteer Leadership Conference goes virtual for 2020 Since 1986, this gathering has provided learning and networking opportunities for Maine’s volunteer leaders. It is the only professional development conference tailored exclusively to the needs and challenges of Maine’s volunteer sector. This year's virtual conference will be held on Tues. Oct. 13. Volunteer Maine recognizes 395 of Maine's dedicated volunteers on Maine Volunteer Rolls of Honor 337 adults and 58 children have been recognized on the Maine Adult and Youth Volunteer Rolls of Honor for their volunteer efforts in 2019. Collectively, the volunteers performed 389,905 hours of community service in Maine. The Rolls of Honor celebrate Maine citizens who go above and beyond in serving their communities. Volunteer Maine awards more than $480K to 7 AmeriCorps programs across the state New grant funding will allow the seven AmeriCorps service projects in Maine to recruit a total of 53 new service members for the 2020-21 program year. These awarded funds will bolster projects in youth mentorship, K-12 education support, and poverty outreach throughout the state. State service commission elects new officers F. Celeste Branham , Jenifer Tilton-Flood and Jonathan Barczyk have been elected to serve as officers on the Volunteer Maine State Service Commission. They will serve as Chair, Chair Elect, and Vice Chair, respectively. This proposed slate of officers passed with unanimous approval from Commissioners present at the June 26, 2020 meeting. Service and volunteerism news and notes from Maine and beyond: Our friends at Maine Street Skowhegan have been getting some love from the Kennebec Journal, which has published news about Skowhegan AmeriCorps Outdoor Recreation Program in addition to a story about efforts to install a public art installation.  Healthy Acadia has been in the news for its efforts to collaborate with local institutions to regularly test tourism workers for COVID-19. But wait, there's more! Trekkers is getting press exposure as well. Both the Penobscot Bay Pilot and the Bangor Daily News have stories on their Thomaston Trek 5K/10K Virtual Race. Food Tank, a think tank that addresses food access at the national level, has highlighted the efforts of Maggie Blumenthal, a Food Corps service member in Sheepscot Valley, ME, to help schoolchildren during the pandemic. It’s exciting to get such a prominent shout-out for one of Maine's dedicated service members!   Independent Sector released a report titled “Trust in Civil Society” that looks at how the public perceives nonprofits. This report is very relevant to any professional working in the volunteer sector.   Finally, congrats to Jody Jones, the executive director of Midcoast Conservancy, who just announced her retirement. She accomplished a great deal while in charge of the nonprofit, and you can read about her career in the Wiscasset Paper.
