No matter your belief system,
there is power in a single act of respect.
"Asked by the BBC to identify the defining moment in his life, (Archbishop) Desmond Tutu spoke of the day he and his mother were walking down the street. Tutu was nine years old.
A tall white man dressed in a black suit came towards them. In the days of apartheid in South Africa, when a black person and a white person met while walking on a footpath,
the black person was expected to step into the gutter to allow the white person to pass and nod their head as a gesture of respect. But this day, before a young Tutu and his mother could step off the sidewalk, the white man stepped off the sidewalk and, as they passed, he tipped his hat in a gesture of respect to her!

Our Mission
Napa Valley CanDo is a vibrant, all-volunteer
service organization.
We connect, inspire, and empower neighbors by making it easy to take positive action as volunteers and to learn about our community.
All of CanDo’s efforts are designed to strengthen and enrich the lives of Napa Valley residents. We create and implement dynamic projects when we recognize unmet community needs, and collaborate with other local service organizations to further our mutual goals.

Compost Corner
Lost and Found
|
Q. Not really a compost question, but I lose so many garden tools, and I believe they might have ended up in my compost bin.
Is there a lost and found at the Recycle Center for tools found in the “green” bins? If so, could we have location and contact info?
-- Thanks, Dianne
A. Hmm, no, we do not have a lost-and-found center. We do some-times find tools,
though by the time they come across our compost sorting line they are often pretty banged up (we pull them out and try recycle them as scrap metal if possible).
It’s a long shot, but if you do know of something important that got accidentally tossed in the compost, let us know ASAP (707.255.5200) and
we can see if it shows up that day.

You Can Fight Food Insecurity,
One Box at a Time
October 10 came and went with nary a green bag in view.
We get it. We get that hundreds of you who are dedicated to CanDo’s Napa Valley Food Project and others across the Valley may be feeling like yo-yos right about now.
But here are so many other important ways to help neighbors in our community keep food on the table.
Volunteer to get food to those in need.
Five days a week, from American Canyon to Calistoga, volunteers are needed to assemble boxes and bags of groceries, distribute food at drive-throughs, deliver boxes to families. Many shifts are just two hours.
How does this happen? CanDo is proud to have teamed up with Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) to organize volunteers county-wide for nonprofits delivering services during this crisis. CanDo’s co-founder, hilary Zunin, has co-chaired Volunteers on Call since March. It has a real CanDo flavor.
Ready to help? If you’re not registered with VOC, sign up online here. hilary will be in touch with next steps.
If you're already part of VOC, you were emailed a new list of volunteer needs Sunday night.

Women Weren't Given the Vote.
They Took It.
"One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote — a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history."

Bits and Pieces
GIRLS IN WINDOWS - Ormond Gigli, 1960
"In 1960, while a construction crew dismantled a
row of brownstones right across from my own brownstone studio on East 58th Street, I was
inspired to, somehow immortalize those buildings.
I had the vision of 43 women in formal dress
adorning the windows of the skeletal facade ...
"Most professional photographers dream of having one signature picture they are known for. “Girls in The Windows” is mine." -Ormond Gigli

The Choices We Make
Napa Valley CanDo seeks to inspire and facilitate action by alerting interested Valley resi-dents about opportunities for service. If you participate as a volunteer in an activity that you learned about through Napa Valley CanDo, whether initiated by CanDo or another orga-nization, please take personal responsibility for your involvement.
