Help Restore the Prairie, One Violet at a Time!

You’ve probably noticed some big changes in the fields at Prairie Woods this summer! We’ve been preparing former grassland areas for a new prairie restoration, which will be dormant seeded this fall with a mix of native wildflowers and grasses.

As part of this project, we’ve ordered 1,000 prairie violet plugs, and we’re organizing a volunteer event to get them in the ground. These violets are especially important because they’re the host plant for the regal fritillary butterfly, a rare prairie species that depends on them to survive.

PWELC Volunteer Day

Saturday, October 25, 2025

12:30–4:00pm

Meet at the PWELC gravel parking lot (just past the main building, near the maintenance building)

We’ll be planting dormant violet plugs. No experience needed. The plugs just need to be planted into the ground and given a bit of water.

What to Bring:

  • Dress for the weather and for working outdoors
  • Bring work gloves and a water bottle
  • Tools and plants provided
  • Family-friendly. Kids welcome with an adult

Let’s plant together! These prairies will become outdoor classrooms and diverse wildlife areas for years to come.

Made possible by Pheasants Forever.
