National Volunteer Honors Go To 2 Maine Youth
Katherine Elliott, 18, of Scarborough and Marissa Bates, 10, of Westbrook were honored in Washington, DC, for their outstanding volunteer service. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognize community service by young Americans.

 

The award program is a joint effort of Prudential Financial, Inc. and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Nominations open each year in the fall. This is the 18th annual set of awards.

More News About Volunteering and Health  

Canadian researchers including Hannah Schreier, Ph.D., found positive health benefits among 106 volunteering high school students as compared to their peers who did not get a chance to do community service. 

 

The research covered 10 weeks and noticed the positive changes in cholesterol, BMI, and inflammation. There are a number of news reports for the February 2013 announcement. An easy place to start is with the overview in the Huffington Post .

"Call for Session Proposals" 
 
Want to extend your resume as a trainer or expert in a facet of volunteer programming, service-learning, or civic health? We have 50 opportunities!

The organizers of the Blaine House Conference on Service and Volunteerism are seeking proposals from Maine and regional presenters willing to deliver high quality sessions at the October conference.

Deadline for submitting session proposals is 17 June 2013.

3 Minute Leadership Survey - What do you really think about volunteers?

Reimagining Service is a national, multi-sector coalition dedicated to increasing social impact through effective volunteer engagement.

To assist with their efforts, they ask for your (very brief!) feedback on how you think about volunteers. The objectives are to:

  1. Better understand the challenges of effectively engaging volunteers
  2. Capture honest feedback about the costs/value of volunteers
  3. Collect current data regarding the types of roles volunteers play

Maine Volunteer Leaders Conference A Success!

 The members of the Androscoggin Volunteer Administrators network organized and hosted 50 of their peers at the first "Maine Volunteer Leaders Conference" on May 3.

 

The day-long gathering was structured to encourage peer advising and exploration of common concerns. Thanks to local leaders for organizing and the Dempsey Center in Lewiston for hosting.

Maine's First Lady Presents 2013 Governor's Awards For Service And Volunteerism

 

 Maine citizens and businesses from Aurora to Milbridge to New Vineyard and Kennebunk were honored at the 27th annual Governor's Awards for Service and Volunteerism.

Maine's 2013 Volunteer Roll of Honor Published  

 

With the help of the Bangor Daily News, hundreds of volunteers across Maine were recognized for spending 500 hours or more in service to their community.

To put this in perspective, the average adult volunteer in Maine spends 37 hours serving through local programs.
