Volunteer Update
February 26, 2019
Volunteers Sharing the Love

Thank you to those who volunteered or donated to make this Valentine's Day special for CRC's participants! The SDA Waterpolo team and Dudek Staff donated 65 goodie bags for our participants, filled with socks and other essentials.

Families at our domestic violence shelter had a Valentine's Day party filled with heartfelt gifts from our generous community. The National Charity League Surf Cities brought a delicious lunch and dozens of homemade Valentine’s cards and the Diamond Boutique donated beautiful pearl necklaces.

And thank you to our FNC Volunteers for donating time on Valentine’s Day (and every day) to provide resources to those who need them.
Volunteer Spotlight
Stories that make me smile ...

Earlier this month I sent out an email detailing the new volunteer opportunity for “Operations Team” (requirement that you can lift up to 100 pounds). Within minutes, I received this reply from a volunteer: “Thanks for the update on volunteer jobs but I cannot fill any of them. What do you have for a 94-year-old woman to do to help?”

The diversity and the willingness of volunteers to partner with CRC in our mission to end hunger, homelessness and domestic violence never ceases to encourage me!
Congratulations to our February Volunteer of the Month: Amanda Lugo

Amanda volunteers at our Encinitas Resale Store and has generously donated more than 240 hours of her time to CRC since 2016. Nominated by store manager Robert Pontier, he says, “Amanda volunteers on Tuesdays at our store which are one of the busiest days of the week! She is a great member of the resale team!” Thank you Amanda for all you do.

The Resale Stores outperformed last year’s sales by double digits this month. Thank you to all who donate to the stores and to those who volunteer alongside CRC staff to keep the stores running smoothly, offer great service to our customers, and bring in valuable funds for our program.
Gardening Volunteers

CRC volunteers come to us with many different skills that they use to support our mission. Thank you to volunteers Lisa and Sue for bringing their green thumbs to CRC and beautifying our (undisclosed) Transitional Housing Spaces!
Skipping Church to Support the Community

On Sunday, February 24th, Solana Beach Presbyterian, Seacoast Church and Venture Church sent volunteers to our Carlsbad and Encinitas Resale stores and to our Food and Nutrition Center for a work day during Community Serve Day. They cleaned and organized the stores, and cleaned the FNC and pulled expired food.  THANK YOU to all who donated their time to help our stores and Food Center shine!

Operations Team

CRC has a new volunteer team we are recruiting and YOU can help us get the word out! We are looking for an Operations Team, able to be on call as drivers, assistant riders, and as warehouse volunteers as needed, often last-minute. Please let me know if you are interested in any of the below operations team volunteer opportunities or pass along to anyone you think might be.

On-Call Driver: CRC is looking for a team of Volunteers to be “On-Call Drivers” for our daily pick up of donated and Fresh Rescue Food. The Fresh Rescue program collects 12,000 tons of food from local grocery stores five days a week and delivers it to our Food and Nutrition Center to be distributed to families and individuals in need. Fresh Rescue runs 8 am- 12:30 pm M-F with an additional afternoon pick up at our Carlsbad Warehouse on Wednesdays and Fridays. Volunteer days and times are TBA based on staff availability.

Minimum qualifications include:
  • Dependable
  • Available last minute
  • Ability to drive CRC’s 20' box truck
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or push 25 lbs. up to 100 lbs.
  • Valid CA driver’s license, and clean driving record
  • Will need to provide your driver’s license and have a live scan screening done.

Training will be provided and there will be a second person in the truck to assist with loading and unloading.

Volunteer Rider/Loader: This person rides along in our truck on the Fresh Rescue and pick-up rotation and helps navigate, load and unload donated food items onto the truck.

Minimum qualifications include:
  • Dependable
  • Available last minute
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or push 25 lbs. up to 100 lbs.
  • Will need to provide your driver’s license and have a live scan screening done.

Warehouse Volunteers: These volunteers are available to help unload and load items onto our truck from our warehouse in Carlsbad when needed. These opportunities are not always able to be planned well in advance and so an "Operations Team" will be a valuable "first ask" when the need arises. Our warehouse stores items used to support our programs and events.

Minimum qualifications include:
  • Dependable
  • Available last minute
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or push 25 lbs. up to 100 lbs.

We ask that all members of the Volunteer Operations Team commit (as best as they know) to 6-12 months of on-call status for CRC and must have a volunteer application and waiver on file with us. Volunteers will report to the office manager and Director of Operations.
Integrative Services Janitorial Help

1-2 volunteers needed to clean our Integrative Services Offices on Wednesdays. Due to heavy traffic from our clients, the office needs more than what our once-a-week service provides.

If you would like information on any of these opportunities, please email Volunteer Manager, Sara Rosenbaum at srosenbaum@crcncc.org .
English Tea Event: Saturday, April 13

Volunteer for CRC's 24th Annual English Tea, "Hope in Bloom," a fundraiser for our programs that work to end hunger, homelessness and domestic violence. Volunteer to help set up on Friday, April 12 or at the event on Saturday, April 13. Sponsorship and silent auction donation opportunities are also available for interested local businesses.

Please contact us if you are interested in finding out more.
Postal Food Drive: Saturday, May 11

Volunteer at the Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive ! There are 40 volunteer slots available between the Solana Beach and Encinitas Post Office sites. This opportunity consists of sorting food into crates and heavy lifting (for some volunteers). Limited number of spots available for children under 14.
If you have a good story of volunteering, please share with me at srosenbaum@crcncc.org . I can include those stories in future newsletters as an encouragement to our team.
