How can volunteering help develop strong leaders?
| |
Volunteerism and leadership are intricately intertwined, forming the cornerstone of community engagement and positive social change. Through volunteer efforts, individuals not only contribute to the betterment of society but also develop essential leadership skills. Whether serving on a nonprofit board, organizing a community event, or mentoring others, volunteers have the opportunity to cultivate qualities such as empathy, collaboration, and problem-solving.
By taking initiative, inspiring others, and making meaningful contributions, volunteers
demonstrate leadership in action. Moreover, volunteering provides a platform for individuals to explore their passions, expand their networks, and gain valuable experience that can translate into leadership roles in various spheres of life. As we continue to navigate the complexities of our ever-changing world, let us recognize and celebrate the profound impact of volunteerism on fostering leadership and creating positive societal impact. At TLG, we embrace volunteerism as part of leadership development, and we hope you enjoy our April Volunteer Month newsletter.

The Ripple Effect of Leadership: Harnessing Influence for Community Growth
Are you a genuine leader? Do you limit your leadership talents to your day job or do you let your leadership light shine 24x7? Genuine leadership transcends the confines of our professional life—it extends to all aspects of life, including our roles as citizens of the communities to which we belong.
While the measure of our leadership is often gauged by our impact on revenues and policies, our true legacy is equally sculpted by our engagement in community development. This commitment to serve not only enriches our communities but also fortifies our understanding and connection to the people we serve.

Managing Volunteers
What’s the biggest problem you’ve ever had managing volunteers? If you’ve ever been a volunteer, and have let a volunteer commitment slip to meet a “real work” deadline, you likely know what most people answer: holding people accountable when you have no authority over them.
Interestingly, though, that problem is one of the reasons that management guru Peter Drucker insisted that volunteering for a nonprofit or association was the best management training available.

Mentoring: A Valuable Investment with a High Leadership ROI
Ask individuals/professionals at every stage of their career what is one thing that has helped them get where they are. Often the answer is “I’ve had great mentors along the way.” To be clear, mentoring can begin at any age and there are two sides or roles involved, i.e., the “mentor” and “mentee.” Here’s a brief review of the investment and payoff (Return on Investment / ROI) of each of these roles as it relates to leadership.

Grant, by Ron Chernow
Bob read this first, and kept saying I should read it. He reads a lot more historical fiction than I do. It’s 1000 pages and I am still slightly shy of halfway through, but it’s a fascinating study in leadership and I think I’ll finish it someday. Grant was a flawed person, as we all are, but as I read I am constantly reminded of Jim Collin’s description of Level 5 Leaders in Good to Great – he described them as a combination of humility and fierce resolve. Grant was incredibly humble and was often indistinguishable from the soldiers he was leading. His humility gave him a powerful connection the troops and built loyalty. He also had the ability to “see” not just one battlefield but the terrain and strategy for the entire war. He had to ability to be fiercely focused on the goal during battle, and was undeterred by the tragedy around him until the immediate conflict was over.
