Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter | November 2020
Neighborhood News November 2020
In the beginning of the pandemic, many of the tenants were forgetting to socially distance and wear their masks. The staff knew they needed to do something to change that.

NCS Residence Program Director Margarita Ramos created the COVID-19 Warrior Wall. Tenants "caught" wearing masks could have their photo taken and put on the wall to show everyone that they were being safe and following the recommended guidelines.

And every COVID warrior got a $25 gift card to a local supermarket! Thank you to our community partners who donated the masks and gift cards.
Corinthian moved into the NCS Residence in 2016, depressed and angry at the world. But when he was hired as a custodian at a family shelter in the Bronx in 2018, he gained a sense of responsibility and his outlook began to change.

The job became even more important to Corinthian this year as he took pride in being an essential worker and loved being able to go out and safely interact with others.

“I get up every single morning and have somewhere to be. I am starting my own life,” he shared. “It’s a good feeling to go outside and to be needed somewhere. It feels good to clean, to do the right thing, and to get paid for it.”

Congratulations to Louis Nine House resident Tyler who is one of The Supportive Housing Network of New York's 2020 Outstanding Tenants of the Year!

Tyler joined the event and celebrated with Louis Nine House and Options staff members. Check out more photos from the night!
SHNNY shared this inspiring video about Tyler at their event.
3,495. That’s the number of meals that were donated to the NCS Residence between March and September.

And each of those meals was distributed by two staff members: Na'eema and Lydia. They stepped up and coordinated all of the meal deliveries, going above and beyond their job requirements to make sure that the NCS residents had meals they could safely eat in their rooms when it wasn’t safe for them to eat together.

Read more about Na’eema and Lydia to learn why NCS Residence Program Director Margarita Ramos shared that she couldn’t “think of a bigger commitment to NCS’s mission.”
Volunteers Return to the NCS Residence
This past month, volunteer groups from Congregation Or Zarua, St. James’ Church, and NCS’s NextGen Network prepared meals for our Upper East Side residents.

Volunteers wore masks and gloves and were limited in number and the meals were distributed to residents by staff members. We can’t wait until we can all safely sit down together again, but until then, the residents know that people from the community are showing up to make sure they have a warm meal.

Thank you to Or Zarua and St. James’ parishioner Jan Golann for sponsoring the respective dinners.

While some of our volunteer dinners are sponsored, many of them are not. NCS has a small budget for dinners but it doesn't cover the cost of all of the meals we would love to provide. Each of these dinners costs approximately $150 for the 50 meals made (a great deal at only $3/person).

This Giving Tuesday, NCS will be raising funds for the dinners prepared by volunteers in 2021, but you don’t need to wait a month to donate! Sponsor an entire dinner or part of one today and know that you are providing hot cooked meals for your neighbors.
