We're about Halfway There!

Thanks to the 20 of you who signed up after last week's email. Below are the numbers we still need for coverage at the discard stations to ensure folks toss in the right containers.

Please sign up here* to keep waste diversion a success at the Bainbridge Grand Old Fourth. When signing in, ignore the Doodle's "vote" language -- just know the slot (or slots!) you check is the slot you'll show up for.

*Someone got a "slot unavailable" message when they tried signing up. This should not happen. This person restarted their computer and then was able to get that shift.

No experience is necessary to be a station ambassador, just bring a friendly attitude. You'll get a sheet that explains what goes where.

Still needed

Please sign up here to help. Thank you!

Rotary Auction Green Team

The other big, fun volunteer event on the island is the Rotary Auction. This is a multi-day effort by 2000 volunteers! To help out, first sign up here as a general volunteer, then follow the directions to choose Green Team shifts.

Green Team Areas:

1) Be a recycle rover. We are constantly on the move, checking on the 31 discard stations throughout the 8am-8pm dayWe need lots more people!

2) During lunch and dinner, the food team watches over the two cafeteria discard stations so that the hungry volunteers throw their compostables in the right toter.

3) The cardboard team breaks down boxes (under a tent this year) and stacks in a shaded dumpster. It's an engineering marvel!

4) The Lawn of Opportunity sorts unsaleables and packs them up for a nonprofit. "Shopping" here is open to everyone who volunteers at Rotary.

5) The Green Desk does miscellaneous sitting tasks and dispenses information.

The action starts Saturday, June 29, and runs through the following Saturday, July 6 (excludes part of July 3 and all of July 4).

ReFashion News

In her most recent newsletter, Naomi Spinak, the inspirational head of Sustainable Bainbridge's ReFashion program, does an interesting deep dive into how she triaged/distributed the textiles from the art installation at the May ReFashion Show.

This display was meant to emphasize how the world is drowning in clothing. The photo within the picture above shows a literal mountain of excess apparel in Chile, one country to which our donations are offshored. Ghana also has become a dumping ground for secondhand clothing -- 15 millions tons a week, in fact.

If this bothers you and you love a hashtag challenge, try #nonewclothes, a pledge to not buy any new clothes for 90 days. Find more information here.

Donation Destinations

Speaking of overabundance, what alternatives are there to the Goodwill truck in the Ace parking lot, once it closes for good on June 30?

Before finding a new location, first follow these guidelines:

1) Make sure your donations are in good condition. Ask yourself, would you pay a decent sum for it?

2) Respect donation hours. Dumping is not cool. Donations can be ruined and may cause an undue burden on store volunteers. (For one local secondhand store's perspective, go to this link and scroll down.)

3) Respect store policy. If the store tells you they cannot take your donation, please accept their decision.
