Volusia Online Learning Community Brief

Monday, March 10, 2025

As we near the end of the 3rd Marking Period, I want to encourage all parents to check the progress of their student(s) this week in all classes. Remember that with testing right around the corner, it would be a good idea to push a little past 50% complete at this point in the semester. Seniors should definitely be over 50% as they are expected to complete all coursework by May 2nd. That’s all I have for this week. Please read below for some important VOL updates from our fabulous Assistant Principal, Mrs. Shaw!

Thank you for reading,

Dr. Serianni

Full-time Updates

Announcing the Superintendent’s Spring Reading Challenge. Students are challenged to read at least 400 minutes between March 1st – 31st and log their minutes in Beanstack to earn a $20 Fun Card from Daytona Lagoon. Students who read more than 600 minutes will earn one water park pass and a companion ticket. Please note, students are only eligible for $20 Fun Card or the water park passes, not both.

Thank you, Stacey Horn, for celebrating our new inductees into VOL’s National Junior Honor Society and National Honor Society. Congratulations to Dee’Neyzha Webb, Rebecca Duff, and Micah Davis.

Thank you to Coach Sabrina Burnam-Hoyt for sponsoring our 3rd Annual Field Day this past Saturday at Deltona Middle School. Students and families had a great day filled with fun challenges, dancing, and good times.

Teachers will be assigning Quarter 3 report card grades based on student progress at the end of the school day on Thursday, March 13th. Report card grades will reflect actual student progress or lack thereof for each course listed on their schedule (this includes special area and elective courses).

Wishing you and your family a relaxing Spring Break. In observance of Spring Break, our offices will be closed the week of March 17th. Live lessons will resume on Monday, March 24th. Although teachers will not be available for DBAs and help me sessions, students can access their virtual courses during Spring Break if they would like to get ahead.

Attention senior parents, caps and gowns will be distributed through Volusia Online Learning on May 8th from 3:30 – 5:30 PM.

Student Spotlight

For the month of March, we want to recognize three of our awesome students!

Elementary:

Our elementary Student of the Month is Delia Pustejovsky. She was nominated by Mrs. Woodward and is in the 2nd grade.

For her nomination, Mrs. Woodward said “Delia is a student who works ahead. I am always so impressed at the pace she keeps, but more importantly, the depth of knowledge she demonstrates on her assignments, particularly in DBA's. It is always such a pleasure to do DBA's with Delia because she is eager to show what she knows. It is beyond evident that Delia is a conscientious student who takes pride in her work. She comes to class prepared, ready to participate, ask questions and encourage others. It is pure joy being part of Delia's educational career. Go, Delia, go!!”

What a wonderful nomination, congratulations Delia!

Middle School:

Our middle school Student of the Month is Addison Leffler. She was nominated by Mrs. Brenda Mabry and is in the 6th grade.

For her nomination, Mrs. Mabry wrote, “Addison is a well-rounded student with a strong passion for science, academics and athletics. She is very disciplined and strives for excellence in all subjects as evidenced by her high achieving grades. She has managed to continue to excel academically while learning how to navigate as a first time virtual school student with VOL.”

Great job Addi! Congratulations!

High School

Our high school Student of the Month is Connor Helmers. Connor is in the 11th grade and was nominated by Mrs. Shawna Moore.

For his nomination, Mrs. Moore wrote, “I would like to recognize Connor Helmers. Connor is an excellent student. He consistently works hard to achieve academic excellence. He is a curious and enthusiastic learner and a critical thinker. He is self-motivated, flexible, and takes initiative, dedication, and responsibility for his own learning. He is positive and respectful in his interactions with others and is an active contributor during discussions."

Congratulations to Connor, wonderful job!

Thank you for reading and have a great week!
