VOL Unplugged Skate Night, one of our special family events during the month of October!
Volusia Online Learning Community Brief
Monday, November 4, 2024
| |
Dear Mark,
Despite a fairly ominous start (two hurricanes in a three-week span), October 2024 was a banner month for VOL. In this edition of the Foxhole Flyer, our distinguished and dedicated Assistant Principal, Melissa Shaw, recaps the happenings of the month and previews what is to come for the remainder of the first semester:
• Focus Parent Portal Updates
Thursday, October 17th marked the end of quarter one. Report card grades can now be accessed in the Focus Parent Portal for your review.
A new online form is now available to parents via their Focus Parent Portal where they can document their wishes concerning permissions to share directory information as well as their student’s photo, video and audio. Parents will need to access their Parent Portal account to complete the form for each of their children.
• Full-time Updates
Thank you to all our students and families that joined us for STEAM Night, Trunk or Treat, VOL Unplugged at the Deland Skating Rink and participated in Red Ribbon Week during the month of October. These events would not be possible without our amazing teacher leaders/sponsors: Stacey Horn, Jennifer Edwards, David Tindal, and Polly Wilson.

• During the month of October, Volusia Online Learning focused on honesty and how to be truthful in our communication with others. When we work to grow our ability to be honest, it also can make us less stressed or anxious because we don’t have to worry about keeping secrets or lying. We build trust with others and feel better about ourselves. We should also try to be leaders and help teach others about the importance of being honest. Be aware that sometimes being honest can cause others to be upset. Sometimes it is hard for people to accept, but we can learn to show honesty while still respecting others and their feelings. Please talk to a friend, family member, or teacher about honesty and share a time that you were honest and how good it made you feel.
• All full-time students should continue to work in their courses on a regular basis. This means that students should be reviewing course content and submitting assignments regularly. Our target date for all work to be completed and submitted is December 13th to be reflected on your child’s Quarter 2 report card. Report card grades will be issued based on student’s progress or lack thereof for each course listed on their schedule (this includes special area and elective courses). Our teachers will not be able to issue a grade if a student has not completed their required DBAs or assessments. Please have your child schedule their required DBAs early to ensure they are complete.
Parents can access their child’s performance and progress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in our learning platforms. Please take note: when reviewing your child’s course progress, students need to complete 100% of Semester 1 course work by our target date of December 13th.
That’s all we have for this week. Please scroll down to read about the great things happening in the VOL Family!
Thank you for reading.

Winter EOCs, ELA Reading Retakes, and Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE):
Students with EOCs, ELA Retakes, and FCLE tests scheduled during the winter testing window can expect to receive personalized testing emails soon with site-specific dates and times for these tests. Specific test dates and arrival times will vary by school.
Upcoming Testing Windows:
- Winter EOCs/ELA Retakes: December 2-20
- Florida Civic Literacy Exam: December 2-20
- Remote PM2 FAST Test Window: January 9-24
Looking ahead to Spring:
For the Spring state testing window in April and May, all state tests must be taken in-person for grades 3-12. We are offering our full-time VOL families a choice to test with VOL teachers at our VOL building in Debary, or at their zoned school. We are collecting test location preferences to guide test planning and registration. Parents and guardians should complete the short survey below for each full-time VOL student in grades 3-12 to indicate whether they will be testing at VOL or their zoned school this spring.

Please reach out to Dr. Markell by emailing bgmarkel@volusia.k12.fl.us or by calling (386) 734-7190 ext. 72701 if you have any questions about state testing.

Volusia Online Learning Salutes Our Veterans!
Monday, November 11 is Veterans Day. This year, if you know of someone who has "worn the uniform," kindly take a moment or two and ask them a few questions. Examples: Ask them when they served, where they served, in what branch they served, what they did while they served, what it was like to serve, and finally, why did they serve. Listen to their story and then you will truly know about the service you are thanking them for. It will make all the difference to them and might give you a greater appreciation for our veterans and the freedoms they ensured we can all enjoy.
On behalf of Volusia Online Learning, thank you veterans for your service. You are appreciated!!
