Volusia Online Learning Community Brief
Monday, January 2, 2023
Volusia Online Learning Community Member,

I hope you had a restful break, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! I am reaching out this week with an abridged version of the Foxhole Flyer to remind you of some important items for the beginning of January:

  • As you are probably aware, the first semester officially ends this Wednesday, January 4th. It is absolutely critical that your child either (a) complete their course by January 4th (including any required DBAs and segment exams) or (b) communicate with their teacher to develop a plan to complete the course shortly thereafter. The key, of course, is to communicate with your child’s teachers.

  • Our Full-Time application for next school year will open on January 17th. Any current VOL student who is in good academic standing and has complied with all testing requirements will automatically be re-enrolled into VOL next year and therefore does not need to re-apply. Any student who is not in good academic standing or has not complied with testing requirements will need to re-apply through the Full-Time Application and we will revisit their enrollment at that time. All parents will be sent an email once semester 1 grades are posted notifying them whether or not they need to apply when the application opens again.

  • Speaking of testing, the second window of the FAST assessment opens on January 9th. Students have already been notified of their testing group and are expected to attend all required testing sessions. I know that the online testing process is still new and people are still getting to know the platform. As a result, we are running practice sessions during live lessons in the first week of January. Secondary students will have an opportunity to revisit the testing platform in both their English/Language Arts class and their math class. Opportunities for elementary students will vary by teacher. As a result, all students are expected to attend their English/Language Arts and math live lessons during the first week of January.

That’s all I have for this issue. We will resume normal Foxhole Flyer distribution on January 15th. I’ll leave you to start your new year off right with this thought from the great C.S. Lewis, “There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”

Thank you for reading,

Dr. Serianni
