Dr. Stevens grew up in a military family and fell in love with San Antonio when his parents were stationed at Fort Sam Houston.

Upon graduation from high school, Dr. Stevens moved back to San Antonio, to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio.

While in college, he met the love of his life, Pricilla, to whom he's been married for 18 years. Together, they are raising three amazing boys -- Michael (17), Andrew (14) and Jacob (5) -- in the beautiful city of Helotes.
Upon graduation from UTSA, he was able to pursue his true passion in the field of education, where he has served students and families for the past 12 years.

During his tenure as an educator, Dr. Stevens has worked at the Henry Ford Academy and O’Connor High School, as an English teacher and worked at Holmes High School as an ELA Instructional Coach.

Currently, Dr. Stevens is the Headmaster of Sunnybrook Christian Academy and works for the NISD Adult and Community Education Center, as an Instructional Coach.

For the past 16 years, Dr. Stevens has served as a licensed Minister at his church, Hope Center, a United Pentecostal Church, located at Loop 1604 and NW Military Highway.

In July of 2021, he was elected as the Regional Director of Children's Ministry, overseeing the Children's Ministries of hundreds of churches for the South Central Texas District, of the United Pentecostal Church International.

Since July of 2022, Dr. Stevens has served as one of the founding board members of the Uvalde Foundation for Kids. This non-profit organization has a mission to end violence, bullying and abuse at school campuses across the nation.
Dr. Stevens holds a BA Degree in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio, a Masters Degree in Education/Teacher Leadership from the University of Phoenix, and a Doctorate in Education/Curriculum and Instruction from Northcentral University.

Plus, he is a certified Texas teacher.
Dr. Stevens wants Curriculum Changes
Across all content areas, and grade levels, curriculum needs to be redesigned to provide students with the skills needed to successfully progress through their academic careers and prepare them for life after graduation.

Phonics, cursive writing and basic computer skills need to be reintroduced into Elementary Curriculum. Life skills classes and pathways to obtaining job certifications and professional licenses must be incorporated into High School Curriculum.
Dr. Stevens believes
STAAR standardized testing is bad
Our current method of standardized testing is detrimental to student success and places undue stress on both teachers and students.

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR test needs to be reworked.

The current version of the STAAR Test does not fully align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills or TEKS. Nor does it capture a true picture of a students comprehension of grade level TEKS.

Plus, performance does not truly capture a student's ability to master grade level content material. Some students deal with testing anxiety, causing them to perform poorly on the STAAR, even if they fully understand the material.

Additionally, alternative testing methods should be available to students as a way to gauge learning and content mastery. Passing the STAAR tests should not be part of a student's graduation, or promotion requirements.
Dr. Stevens opposes politics in the classroom
Schools are places of education and not indoctrination.

Curriculum should solely be based on factual information, negating any personal biases, political agendas, religious beliefs, or unsupported theories.
Dr. Stevens insists that
parents have the right to see everything!
Parents and guardians should have access to view what their children are learning in the classroom and an unobstructed method of questioning material they find unsuitable.
Dr. Stevens is horrified that some
curriculum in public schools sexualizes kids
There is no place however, for sexually explicit content in any of our Texas schools.

Plus, students should not have access to tangible material that would be blocked if they tried to access it online.
Dr. Stevens believes that
school choice empowers parents
If a parent/guardian feels that the neighborhood school is not providing their student with the quality education their children need, then they should be able to move that student within the district to a school that does.

At $6,100 per year per student, that money should follow the student to a charter school, a private school or the homeschool on one condition. The legislature must ensure that the government does not control what is taught in that private or homeschool.
Dr. Stevens wants Governor Greg Abbott to
fire Education Commissioner Mike Morath
As Dr. Stevens said on Facebook, "Today, Greg Abbott fired Smokey the Cannon. I’d be more impressed if he fired Mike Morath."

He is the Education Commissioner who runs the Texas Education Association which oversees teacher certification and regulation of schools.

Dr. Stevens said, "Most teachers I know view Mike Morath as incompetent and the major reason for the many failures in Texas Public Education.

"Mr. Morath has a grand total of zero years of teaching experience, yet he is tasked with making decisions on behalf of teachers at the highest level of the state!"
Mike Morath, the Texas Education Commissioner, pictured above,
should be fired for incompetency!
