One of the most common questions I hear from Citizens is about self-government. Whether it is asking how it’s going, what it looks like day to day, or whether we’re there yet. Those are fair questions. Building our own Métis government is complex work, and at times it truly feels like we are building the plane while flying it. But that is what real governance looks like, careful, deliberate work done with our Citizens at the centre of every decision.
Self-government is the steady transition to our new governance structure grounded in our Constitution, shaped by our laws, and guided by the voices of our Citizens. That work was reflected in the recent public release of the federal What We Heard report following the Métis-Canada Summit, where we asserted our role as a self-governing government and brought forward your priorities.

We're Hiring: Deputy Returning Officers and Polling Clerks
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting Deputy Returning Officers and Polling Clerks for the upcoming elections on February 22, 2026.
- Temporary, honoraria-based roles
- Polling stations across Alberta
- Training provided
- 12–14 hours depending on availability
Deputy Returning Officers: Oversee the polling station, lead staff, manage set up/take down, and support a fair voting process.
Polling Clerks: Support the DRO, record voters, complete paperwork, and help keep the polling station running smoothly.
We’re looking for organized, community-minded individuals with strong communication skills and knowledge of Métis governance and culture. Must be 18+ and able to travel.

Secretary Spotlight:
Nelson Lussier
In his role as Secretary of Justice, Secretary Lussier is advancing a community-driven justice agenda focused on fairness, accountability, and culturally grounded solutions. He supports the development of a Métis Justice Framework, incorporating traditional dispute resolution practices while addressing contemporary legal challenges facing Métis communities. The Justice Department is guiding the establishment of Community Justice Programs, including restorative justice initiatives, Elder-led mediation circles, and culturally grounded sentencing alternatives, promoting community-based responses that foster healing and accountability.
He actively combats systemic discrimination by advocating for training programs for justice system professionals and the creation of Métis-specific court support services. Strengthening legal partnerships is also a priority, with efforts to collaborate with law schools, legal aid organizations, and provincial and federal justice departments to improve access to justice. Secretary Lussier advocates for policy reforms at all levels of government to address the overrepresentation of Métis people in the criminal justice system.

Join Us At The Annual Family Talent Show
Join us in Bonnyville for a celebration where our heritage takes centre stage at the Annual Family Talent Show hosted by the St. Paul-Cold Lake Métis District! This event isn’t just a show — it is a gathering of our community to uphold the traditions that define us and the spirit that connects us.
On February 7, join us at the fieldhouse in the Bonnyville & District Centennial Centre for a showcase of Métis talent, along with door prizes and a 50/50 concession. A $500 grand prize is up for grabs for the best entertainer in any category!

The Environment and Climate Change Department is relaunching its popular Seed Mail Out Program. Program participants will receive seeds, gardening tools, a beginner-friendly Get Your Garden Growing guide, and resources to support native pollinators.
You must be an Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizen aged 18 or older to be eligible for this program.

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is proud to partner with the MAN VAN® to offer FREE prostate cancer screening. Prostate cancer screening is done through a simple blood test.
Blood sugar, blood pressure, waist circumference measurements, and mental wellness checks will also be offered to all men aged 18+.

Breaking The Silence
Breaking the Silence – Empowering Métis Men and Boys, is a province-wide engagement initiative focused on gender-based violence and the realities facing missing and murdered Indigenous men and boys.
Community gatherings will take place in Calgary, Grande Prairie, Lac La Biche, and Lethbridge. Male-identifying participants aged 18 and over will be invited into culturally grounded, trauma-informed spaces for dialogue, reflection, and healing.

Mamawi Pimohtetan
Métis men! We invite you to join us for Mamawi Pimohtetan, which means “Walking Together” in Cree. This is a weekly men’s group designed to empower Métis men by strengthening their connection to culture and community, while also focusing on breaking the cycles of family violence.
Métis men (Citizen or self-identified) aged 18+ are invited to join us virtually on Zoom to learn about boundaries, coping strategies, and healthy relationships while engaging in traditional Métis knowledge.

Capotes are Métis coats that were traditionally handmade from wool blankets. They are light, but warm and water resistant. Participants will make their own coat, personalized with pockets and optional embellishments.
