Last week, I had the honour of welcoming municipal leaders from across Alberta and from every corner of Canada to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Annual Conference, here in Edmonton. It was a powerful moment to stand in front of that room, on behalf of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and our more than 78,000 Métis Citizens and share the story of this place.
Métis families lived, worked, harvested, and built community along the North Saskatchewan River long before Edmonton became the city we know. The river lots they developed still echo in Edmonton’s map today, and one of the city’s wards carries the name Métis. We are not new to this place. We are part of its foundation.
The message I carried to that room was simple: when municipalities work with Métis governments in a respectful way, the outcomes are stronger for our communities and for everyone who calls them home. Métis Citizens are your neighbours and your constituents. Building strong communities means building them together.
This year’s FCM theme was “Building the future together.” Canada is being asked to build more homes, stronger infrastructure, and more inclusive communities. That work cannot be done properly unless Indigenous governments are part of it from the beginning. We are still here, and we are still building.

Kaila Mitchell
Secretary Of Health, Wellbeing And Seniors
Secretary Kaila Mitchell’s leadership is shaped by a strong connection to her Métis identity, a passion for community advocacy, and a commitment to improving the wellbeing of Métis Citizens. A proud two-spirit Métis woman with family roots in Lac Ste. Anne, Jasper House, and the Michel Band, she grew up on a ranch near Marlboro and brings both lived experience and extensive policy expertise to her role with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
As Secretary responsible for Health, Wellness and Seniors, Mitchell has focused on advancing Métis-led solutions that address the unique needs of Citizens while strengthening relationships with provincial, national, and international partners. Her work reflects a belief that Métis people are best positioned to guide the programs and services that affect their communities.

Citizens’ Gathering: Application Deadline For Artist Market Extended To June 30
The application deadline for the Artist Market at the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizens’ Gathering has been extended to June 30.
This year, the Citizens’ Gathering will take place from August 20–22 at the Multi-Rec Centre in Slave Lake.
The Artist Market will be open on August 21 and 22.

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is seeking a Judicial Tribunal Member for the North Saskatchewan River Territory to serve on the Judicial Tribunal for a four-year term.
Members help ensure disputes are resolved fairly, lawfully, and efficiently, including matters related to decisions, actions, laws, citizenship, and the Constitution of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

Free Prostrate Cancer Screening For Métis Men
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is proud to partner with the MAN VAN® to offer FREE prostate cancer screening for Métis men (aged 40-70). Prostate cancer screening is done through a simple blood test.
Blood sugar, blood pressure, waist circumference measurements, and mental wellness checks will also be offered to all men aged 18+.

The eligibility criteria for this program is as follows:
- Parents and caregivers on behalf of at least one child who is an Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizen and who is enrolled in Pre-K to Grade 12 Education.
- Children must be between the ages of 4–18.

Youth over 16 can apply on their own if they live independently, are enrolled in High School, and must be Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizens.
- Applicants must reside in Alberta.

Prepare Now: Homebuyer Assistance Program Reopens In July
The Down Payment Assistance Program will reopen on July 10. This program provides financial assistance to eligible Métis Citizens in Alberta to help with the down payment on a home.
Eligible applicants may receive a forgivable loan of up to 5% of the purchase price, to a maximum of $20,000. Applicants must have a mortgage pre-approval and are encouraged to review the program details and prepare their required documents in advance.
