The Latest Episode Of The True Canadians Podcast Is Out!
Having devoted a lifetime to Métis rights and activism, Elder Tony Belcourt has seen it all. Raised in the historic Métis community at Lac Ste. Anne, Alberta, Belcourt quickly learned what Louis Riel realized 100 years earlier, that progress in Métis recognition meant going to one place: Ottawa. As the founding president of the Native Council of Canada, Belcourt took centre stage when the Métis banded together with non-Status Indians to plot a pathway to constitutional recognition in the early 1970s. A decade later, he supported efforts in Ottawa’s “hallowed halls” to convince then–Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to include the Métis by name in the Constitution Act of 1982. And in 1991 he was there to watch then–Prime Minister Brian Mulroney call for the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, which drew public attention to the demands of the Métis, First Nations, and Inuit.
Despite having earned his retirement after more than 50 years of political wins and setbacks, Belcourt has scarcely slowed down.

FASD is a complex topic for all families. For Indigenous families, layers of stigma, systemic racism, and varying experiences with culturally safe health care add to the delicate nature of conversations about FASD. In this webinar, Dr. Tremblay will unpack the concept of cultural safety, and reflect on ways to approach conversations about FASD with sensitivity, humility, and respect.
The Zoom link will be sent to a registered guests on the day of the event.

Join One Of Our Energy And Climate Community Engagements
Do you work in the energy sector or have thoughts about the transition away from fossil fuels?
We’ve partnered with Iron and Earth to host small group discussions in communities across Alberta affected by the changing economy and the transition away from non-renewable energy sources. Traditional decision-making often overlooks the needs and interests of fossil fuel workers, Indigenous peoples, and our communities.
These sessions aim to cut through the noise by engaging in discussions specific to the Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
All Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government are welcome for conversation about where our energy comes from, the changing climate, and how we advocate for Métis needs.
Light food and refreshments will be served.
Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government will be offered:
- $100 honorarium for your time and contributions.
- Reimbursement for travel expenses or arranged transportation (available upon request).
- Reimbursement for child or dependant care as needed.
| |
|
The specific times and locations will be provided closer to the date.
If you have any questions, please contact climate@metis.org.

Sustainability Tip Of The Week
Spring Clean, Sustainably!
Commonly-used cleaning ingredients are compounds, or biodegrade into compounds, that are toxic to the environment. Some ingredients are essential for growth but can be disruptive to ecosystems when they enter the environment through water systems.
Additionally, labels like “natural,” “clean,” or “sustainable” are not regulated, and their positive impact on the environment is unclear. We can reduce our impact when we learn which ingredients to avoid or when we switch to reusable microfibre cloths. To reduce packaging, we can choose to buy cleaning solutions from stores with refillable bulk options or in solid formats.
