Statement On Bilodeau Unescorted Absences
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government, under the leadership of President Sandmaier, stands in support of the Sansom and Cardinal families during this profoundly difficult time. The recent decision by the Parole Board of Canada to grant Roger Bilodeau unescorted temporary absences, despite the ongoing appeals and over the objections of the victims’ families, has understandably deepened the wounds of a community still in mourning.
“The decision to grant unescorted absences to Roger Bilodeau, a man convicted of manslaughter in connection with the deaths of Jacob Sansom and Maurice Cardinal, two respected Métis hunters, is a complete disregard for the gravity of the loss suffered by their loved ones and our community,” said the President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, Andrea Sandmaier.
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government urges the justice system to place a greater emphasis on the voices and experiences of victims’ families. They must ensure that decisions are made with a comprehensive understanding of their potential effects on the community’s sense of justice and security.
President Sandmaier added, “the Otipemisiwak Métis Government stands in solidarity with the victims’ families. We share their frustration and anger, not just as a government but as a community that values justice, accountability, and the well-being of its citizens. We are committed to supporting the families through these trying times and we will continue advocating for a justice system that reflects the values of fairness, compassion, and respect for all victims and their families.”

The Latest Episode Of The True Canadians Podcast Is Out!
In this episode, Anthony Wilson-Smith, a former journalist and current CEO and president of Historica Canada, talks with host David Wylynko about how successive prime ministers interacted with the Métis, First Nations, and Inuit, and how Canada’s attitude has evolved from dismissive, to paternalistic, to an acceptance of the need for the real changes represented by Bill C-53, which recognizes Métis self-government.

Join One Of Our Energy And Climate Community Engagements
Do you work in the energy sector or have thoughts about the transition away from fossil fuels?
We’ve partnered with Iron and Earth to host small group discussions in communities across Alberta affected by the changing economy and the transition away from non-renewable energy sources. All Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government are welcome for conversation about where our energy comes from, the changing climate, and how we advocate for Métis needs.
Light food and refreshments will be served.
Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government will be offered:
- $100 honorarium for your time and contributions.
- Reimbursement for travel expenses or arranged transportation (available upon request).
- Reimbursement for child or dependant care as needed.

Sustainability Tip Of The Week
Start composting in your yard or in your home today!
Outdoor compost bins can be started any time of year and are a great way to reduce waste while providing nutrients in your garden. Fallen leaves and grass clippings from your yard, as well as coffee grounds, kitchen scraps and mouldy food from your kitchen are perfect for composting.
For first time composting, be sure to check for items that are not safe to compost.
If you do not have a yard with space for a large bin, consider starting a worm composting bin (vermicomposting) or a countertop composter.
Check out the City of Edmonton’s guides for indoor and outdoor composting.
