Voyageur Voice

President's Corner

Our commitment to addressing the legacy of Métis scrip remains strong, and we are actively working toward a land claim agreement with Canada as part of our overarching self-government negotiations.

The law is like a living tree. It grows and adapts as times change. As we continue our journey towards self-governance and advancing Métis rights, we must remember the law is just one more tool we can use to advance our Nation. The first and best tool we have as Métis people, will always be our ability to organize and work together.

This week's MNC AGM marked a period of change and the need for further reform. Our top priority will always be Métis Citizens in Alberta, and our Citizens' Council expects Alberta's role as a founding member of the MNC to be respected as we work together on reforms. We are ready to help shape an MNC that better serves the unique needs of all Métis governments.

Pathway To Healthy Living

Don’t Wait - Get Screened Today

A Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), or poop test, can help identify abnormal cells early. Anyone between the ages of 50 and 74 is advised to have a FIT, or poop test, every year.

A colonoscopy is a specialized screening test that is recommended if you have a personal or family cancer history, or if an abnormality is detected.

You may need to begin cancer screening earlier than the recommended age guidelines depending on your personal or family cancer history. Talk to your family doctor about cancer screening to determine what is right for you.

Needing additional support? Check out these resources available for travel assistance, or booking appointments if you do not have a family doctor:

  • Otipemisiwak Métis Government Medical Travel Program: This program provides financial reimbursement for those travelling more than 100km to a medical appointment (including cancer screening). View eligibility and/or apply at albertametis.com/medical-travel-program/

  • Alberta Indigenous Virtual Care Clinic: This virtual clinic can help you access cancer screening if you don’t have a family doctor. Go to aivcc.ca to learn more.
