As we approach November, I want to remind you that Métis Week is just around the corner. It’s a time to honour our heritage, reflect on the legacy of Louis Riel, and recognize the contributions Métis people have made to this country.
I encourage all of you to join us at the Alberta Legislature on November 16 for the Louis Riel Commemorative Event.
In recent weeks, I’ve had the privilege of attending several events, including Shaakipakowa: Celebrating Our Métis Student and Alumni Community in Calgary, hosted by the Rupertsland Institute. We also marked a major milestone with the creation of a new Métis Education Endowment at Olds College.

Louis Riel Commemoration
On November 16, 1885, Louis Riel gave his life defending Métis rights. Every year, we gather to honour his legacy and pay tribute to his life.
Join us this year on November 16 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for a commemoration ceremony.
The event is open to the public and will feature prayers and music by the Prince Charles Fiddlers.

Mail-in voting packages have been sent out for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government District Elections, taking place on October 29 and November 5, 2024.
Please check your mailbox and return your package to ensure your choice of District representative is counted!
To guarantee your ballot package is received by November 5, it should be mailed by October 25.

It’s a safe, welcoming space for Métis parents, grandparents, and caregivers to share experiences, learn from one another, and explore ways to make the holiday season smoother and more peaceful.

Introducing the FASD Bridging Futures Program
Rooted in Métis culture and values, this program supports Métis youth (aged 15 – 25) with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in their transition to adulthood.

We offer:
- Collaborative goal setting and strength-based assessments
- Resources, connections, and referrals
- Transition support to adult services
- Assistance with Otipemisiwak Métis Government citizenship
- Cultural involvement and community connection.
Eligibility:
Métis youth (aged 15 – 25) in Alberta, with or without an FASD diagnosis.
Willingness to actively participate with caregiver consent if needed.
Self-referrals are welcome!

This year, consider leaving the leaves on your lawn instead of raking and throwing them away. Dead leaves are an important part of the ecosystem, providing the soil with nutrients and feeding a healthy microbiome. Removing the leaves can diminish the soil health and cause reliance on fertilizers.
What to do instead?
Spread mulched leaves evenly across your lawn or on top of garden beds. This will help insulate the soil over the winter, protecting the soil's microbial life .If you want to remove the leaves from your lawn, consider composting them, instead of throwing them out.

A Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), or poop test, can help identify abnormal cells early. Anyone between the ages of 50 and 74 is advised to have a FIT, or poop test, every year.
A colonoscopy is a specialized screening test that is recommended if you have a personal or family cancer history, or if an abnormality is detected.
You may need to begin cancer screening earlier than the recommended age guidelines depending on your personal or family cancer history. Talk to your family doctor about cancer screening to determine what is right for you.
