As summer comes to an end and we welcome the season of fall, it’s a time of year that typically inspires a strong sense of renewal. In this spirit, upcoming elections for some District Councils and District Captains will soon be taking place.
District Councillors are a critical piece in our constitution, representing Citizens and Métis communities

locally, handling issues related to lands, consultation, and accommodation on behalf of Citizens residing in their District.
They have authority over matters of administration, finances, and securing additional funding for local programs and services. This is a chance to represent your community at a District level, bring forward ideas, propose solutions, and work tirelessly for the betterment of all our people.
If you are interested in running to become a District Captain or member of a District Council if you live in one of these Métis Districts holding upcoming elections, the deadline to submit your nomination package is September 14, 2024, at 5 p.m.

Become A Candidate
Are you passionate about your Métis District and considering a role in the Otipemisiwak Métis Government?
This Fall, the Métis Nation of Alberta will be holding District Captain and District Council elections for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, October 29 – November 5, 2024.
Running for office is a significant decision that allows you to make a positive impact and represent the interests of your District and Citizens.

It’s an opportunity to shape programs, champion services, and contribute to the future of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
Nomination packages can be picked up in person at the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer or can be requested by calling toll-free 1-877-576-4250 or emailing elections@metis.org.
Deadline to submit nomination packages is Saturday, September 14 at 5 p.m.

Jasper Emergency Relief: Final Call For Applications To Be Submitted.
Applications close on Sept. 17.
Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizens whose primary residence is within the evacuation zone for the recent wildfires in Jasper National Park may be eligible to receive up to $200 of financial support from the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

You may qualify for the evacuation payment if you:
- Are a Citizen of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
- Had to leave your primary residence home due to the Jasper wildfire evacuation order.
- Have recent proof of residence within Jasper National Park. Secondary residences and recreational properties are not eligible.
- Funding is limited to a one-time $200 payment per eligible Citizen and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Looking For A Fun And Rewarding Way To Connect With Nature?
Come join us for a native seed collection event on Sunday, September 22, at Elk Island National Park!
Our Environment and Climate Change Department is working with Parks Canada to hold a Citizen volunteer event to collect seeds from native plants within the park.

Seeds collected will be planted on Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas to increase the presence of native plants. Volunteer for this event to get some hands-on experience with plant identification and seed collection. We provide the food, transportation, tools, plant ID materials, and conservation experts. We just need you!
The event begins at 8:45 a.m. Transportation to and from Edmonton and a catered lunch are provided. There are only 30 spots available.

Did you know you can thrift for more than just clothes?
Many thrift stores also carry loads of dishware, kitchen supplies, and more. Stores like Find and Habitat ReStore specifically carry furniture, dishware, appliances, and even building materials!
At Habitat you can expect to find items such as windows, doors, paint, hardware, lumber, tools, lighting fixtures, furniture, and appliances depending on what’s been recently donated. These stores are also nonprofits supporting a mission to end homelessness. By shopping at these organizations, you’re helping the environment and your community!
If you can avoid buying new, that is always the most sustainable option. Thrifting promotes sustainability by reducing waste and demand for new production. It conserves resources while also promoting a pattern of reduce, reuse, and recycle!
