^{Project Spotlight: Costa Rica}

^{Women Driving Forest Governance in Costa Rica}

This month, we bring you the inspiring story of Costa Rica’s REDD+ Results-Based Payments Project, one of the first Green Climate Fund–financed initiatives to apply the W+ Standard. Implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Government of Costa Rica, the project highlights how climate finance can simultaneously advance forest conservation, carbon reduction, and gender equality.

By rewarding 14.7 million tonnes of verified CO₂ emission reductions, the initiative strengthened sustainable forest management while placing women’s leadership at the center of climate action. Through targeted strategies for rural and Indigenous women, the project created spaces for dialogue, capacity-building, and participation in decision-making related to forest governance and territorial planning.

Over 400 women took part in leadership and livelihood trainings, and eight women’s forest networks were established—connecting local voices to national climate policies. The application of the W+ Standard made these empowerment outcomes visible and verifiable, showing a 22% increase in women’s participation in governance forums, a 15% rise in leadership confidence, and 30% of participants engaging in sustainable livelihood initiatives.

Costa Rica’s experience offers a powerful model for integrating gender equality into results-based climate finance—proving that when women lead, forests thrive and communities grow stronger.
